I am CKD level 3, and Doctor prescribed an appropriate renal diet. Basically have to watch intake of sodium, phosphorus, and potassium and have maximum levels for each. So far the diet has slowed down the progression of CKD. You have come to right forum for information and sharing on Chronic Kidney Disease.

Many things can cause accute elevation of creatinine. Dehydration and exercise are two examples. And probably the most underestimated and common reason is consumption of cooked meat. I’m guessing this is the most common cause of “false” reduced eGFR. For some odd reason fasting is typically not required before a creatinine blood test even though it is well documented that meat causes a fairly significant increase in creatinine levels.

Creatinine is a nitrogenous form of metabolic waste. High protein foods especially from animal products do indeed influence this reading. Urea and creatinine are both forms of nitrogenous waste. For kidney health it is best to reduce meat consumption and when you do have it, source grass fed and pasture fed. Meat is acidic to the body tissues along with sugar, alcohol, caffeine and hydrogenated oils. There are many other variables that apply for kidney health and each person is unique in how they respond. So keep tuning into what works for you, educate and inform yourself from good sources. Stress also impacts this reading so ensure you are getting good sleep and not worrying about things - so in turn this means doing things you enjoy and spending time with people who uplift.

Yes, the food we eat can have an impact on the Creatinine level and, as a result, the GFR. That means, not only can it raise the Creatinine level and lower the GFR, but it can lower the Creatinine level and raise the GFR. You would do best to research diet information regarding CKD. You can start with the DaVita site, but you can find much valuable info at other sites as well. Orange City cites watching sodium, phosphorous and potassium. I would add lowering the level of protein that you eat, and increasing your fluid intake.
