My kidneys are at present 12% what stage is this? What stage do u need to think about dialysis? Today I had an ultrasound and I heard them mention 8 and 10, which is just three weeks since I was told they were working at 12%. Could this 8 & 10 I heard them say be 8% and 10%, could they go down that quickly?

You really need to pluck up courage and ask the doctors what is going on. They should not be muttering percentages without explaining the implications to you but if they are then then please question them. They might be talking about something completely different than your % kidney function (egfr) and I am sure they would be upset to hear that you have gone off worrying about this. But you really must ask.

Sorry- to answer your question anything lower that 15% is stage 5. You can easily find this on the Internet but if you are not confident looking on there then please ask me and I will do my best to help find whatever you need. I am late stage 4 with 18% egfr so we are in this together! And also do not worry too much about going up and down as the kidney functions will vary at different times. Mine have swung from a high of 21% to a low of 17% over the last 3 months.

Would this be the size of each kidney, mine was 8.6 on the one and the other 10.4.

I can see this post is some months old, how did you get on after, did you find out what they were talking about? x
