I guess it all depends what has caused it to shrink.

But my overall kidney function fell to 8% four years ago and now its mainly in the 30s with a bit of fluctuation.

At the time I excluded many things from my diet as my kidneys could no longer process them easily

All tea and coffee sugary and fizzy drinks, salt, fried foods. I drank mainly water or sometimes honey and lemon for a hot drink. Foods were largely steamed or boiled.

If you decide to try the food approach any renal change for the better will take a while, if it happens. If you are in a family environment it will most probably mean you will have to make food changes that may not be popular food changes for other family members. Simply because you can no longer process foods as easily as them. Or to have two separate menus.

You need to find out why the doctors think it shrank in the first place. But the general question as to whether kidneys CAN recover is that maybe they can with work.

My kidney function dropped to 5% about two years ago. It was due to too much medication. After prompt hospitalisation, drips etc my kidneys recovered quite quickly.

Good luck!

My kidney stone is about that size and it's been growing in there for 3 years, chronic pain for 3 years as well. Pains worse now and my kidney function is dropping. Did your function decline due to the stone?
