A big drinking day for me was St Patrick’s Day. I have Irish heritage and thought it was my right and responsibility to celebrate the day. Which reminds me of a joke.
“An Irishman walks past a bar.”
That’s it. That’s the joke. No offense meant to my Irish brethren.
I intend to celebrate the day by walking past that bar.

Mum's maiden name is Sullivan from South Boston Ma. Paty's is always a big deal. There are lot's of other ways to honor the holiday. Corned beef & Cabbage is what I always look forward too, the smell of all the trapping of the New England boiled dinner, and we get to have it 2 hours earlier than a normal dinner hee hee. I would gather it would be difficult if you're surrounded by other folks who are gargling the suds, but just think, that's not you who's gonna feel bloated in an hour
yeah just think of their hangovers! Could you get drunk on the atmosphere instead or do you prefer to avoid bars? I only go to the pub if I'm eating a meal. I don't 'go out drinking' anymore. That was my 20s and 30s!
I have to be aware of the atmosphere. It’s deceiving. My alcoholic brain is very hypersensitive to all those shiny bottles and laughing people. It doesn’t trigger me but I remain vigilant a day at a time. I only go where there’s booze if I have a good reason to go there. And if I’m in a fit spiritual condition.
they know how to have a party that`s for sure my grandparents are from Sligo sadly never got to meet them. been to St Patricks day out in Manchester not a patch to what it would be like in Ireland.
A ghoulish true story: an alcoholic Irish friend of mine who has since died, had regular bouts of sobriety.
On one occasion he was walking forlornly around Dublin on Christmas night. A policeman approached him with suspicion outside the gates of Trinity College. Having ascertained my friend was harmless the policeman suggested “why don’t you go and get drunk like everyone else?”
