I just watched the first episode of the UK /Irish comedy series “The Dry” on ITVX. So apologies if you can’t access it.
It revolves around a thirty something woman returning home to Dublin and is a recovering alcoholic. For me, lots of it hits home: friends and family who pussyfoot around a non-drinker as if dealing with an extraterrestrial.
But what really struck was the rejection of a former boyfriend who walks away saying “Get back in touch when you’re back on the sauce. You were more fun then.”
I’ve heard that and it hurts

I had to learn to revoke “judging licenses” from people. What my drunk friends thought about my recovery was a non issue. I am such a people pleaser that I wanted (needs?) their approval. I have to do what’s best for me and my sobriety. It’s that simple. If I don’t stay sober, I’m nothing. But if I stay away from a drink today, I am a worthy human being.
It might be too much of a trigger for you to watch now. I watched “Lost Weekend” in a detox and it made me feel I was living that movie including the craving the actor felt. The first few years of sobriety, I changed the channel a lot.
l realise this is an old post but I just watched ' The Dry' on ITVX it is very powerful. Her ex boyfriends and famies reaction to her sobriety is the reaction that many will experience, very painful. Insightful and interesting to watch.
