Hello, I’ve just joined this group as I have an issue with alcohol, I really struggle to stop once I start drinking and it has affected too many previous relationships. I would love to get to the stage of just being able to have a couple when socialising but if I can’t do that I might have to just quit completely. Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you

Can recommend NHS app Drink Free Days - but you need to be honest about how much you drink. Then log your progress. Working for me at moment but I’m only in first month. Ask me again in another month. Then again!
Hi Stevo. Since you say you’ve been struggling to control your drinking when you drink and have been for a while, you may need to seriously look at stopping. I don’t know how often you drink, but cutting back won’t remove the problem. The problem is you can’t control how much you drink when you drink. Whether it’s once a week or once a month. No one wants to give up something that initially brought them some sort of comfort. But it sounds like alcohol is no longer a comfort to you. It’s a problem now. Remove the problem and the problem is alcohol. Some people drink because they need relief from unpleasant problems in their life . Alcohol isn’t the answer. This is where counseling is needed instead to learn how to deal with those problems. If you decide you need to stop drinking, go for the gold, a worldwide accepted treatment and support group. A twelve step program. 🍀
Hello Stevo10, I am an Alcoholic. I was asked to seek help via AA by my Shrink back in 2006. September I will be completing 16 years of sobriety. I am sharing this because I could hardly stay away from alcohol for a week. I would try to stay stopped but my mind always tricked be back into taking alcohol.
Later I learned by reading the book Alcoholics Anonymous if you are alcoholic, there are 3 things we have to look into. The first one is our mental state, how it is when we stopped thinking. Is it restless, irritable or discontented. You could add other manifestations like anxiety boredom.......That will lead us into this peculiar mental twist, we know that we cant drink safely but our mind will trick us into drinking after a few days goes by. After we succumb to the desire and take that first drink then we under go what the book calls the phenomenon of craving. Thats why may just want to drink a drink or two but end up drinking whole bunch of liquor. This only happens to a small percentage of human population.
The solution is to realize that we cant stay sober without the 12 step and working thru the remindder of the steps as suggested by the book. If you have any questions please feel free too ask.
