Hi all, I’m new here!

Hi everyone.

Im really trying to cut down on the amount of alcohol I drink. If I open a bottle of wine in the evening, I have to drink the whole bottle. Why can’t I stop after 1 glass? I want to be healthier for my toddler, and stop feeling groggy in the morning. But I get to the evening and I find it hard to resist. :(

I had my first drink at age 16 and my last 8 months ago at age 71. What happened in between? Well, it was a gradual progression to alcohol use disorder. Booze throws a heavy wet blanket on your potential. Even low level use is detrimental to health, potential and productivity. Many adults told me I was smart - and I wonder where my potential would have taken me! Quit while you're young and live the life you were meant to live. No one on their death bed said "I wish I had drank more!"

Hi.Like a lot of drinkers, including me, we are binge drinkers, once you start and get a taste for it, we just can't or don't want to stop. I just did a 20 day straight AF then yesterday had one beer and ended up going to the pub with family and had a jolly time with plenty of alcohol . Not good I know but understanding your addiction and the triggers help to moderate the drinking so I will try another 20 days , keeping a progress wall chart also helps, give it a go and good luck .

Thanks Steve - I am completely a social drinker (as well as a home drinker!), but feel I have to drink to have a nice time even with my friends!

I do the same and the habit has been with me for what seems like for ever. I have all the excuses to drink, which you probably know them yourself and I also use alcohol to be social as a confidence booster. But a do think that small changes can make big differences so cutting out drinking along isn't easy but a good start.

Welcome to the community. This is a good place to be. Sharing our stories helps others and ourselves.

My experience can’t help you moderate, because I failed at it. If I have one drink, I want more. One drink never made much sense to me anyway. Why bother?

I drank for the effect. Not because I liked the taste. That should have told me something right there.

Anyway, keep coming back and let us know how you’re doing.

I request you to read the chapter "More about alcoholism" from the book Alcoholics Anonymous, from the bottom of my heart. aa.org/sites/default/files/.... This particular chapter illustrates how the mind operates just prior to a spree. The 3 mini stories are there to show how the mind tricks us into taking that first drink after a long absence and then something happens after we take the first drink and then we are off to the races.

Was thinking about wine ( no surprise) it is notoriously tricky to moderate. Club soda run a £20 course about cutting down or quitting wine drinking which might be useful. Also Claire Pooley ' The Sober Diaries' (mum struggling with wine drinking) would be a good and supportive read. Keep on keeping on.
