Does anyone know of people on dialysis to choose to stop treatment?

Hi @Jfkh30,

This is the first time I have seen one of your messages, so I looked up your previous posts to get some back ground.

I understand that it is your husband who has had 2 rejected transplants and now is considering giving up dialysis.

Has he considered another type of dialysis (I don't now if he's having PD or venus)?

If it's the actual dialysis he's had enough of, maybe there's ways to improve/change it. But reading your previous posts, I suspect he's wanting to stop living rather than stop dialysis.

Obviously he's suffering from severe depression and that's what needs addressing, although I'm sure you know this and have tried to help him. I also worry about your mental state. It is such an awful situation for you.

I'm sorry I can't offer any substantial advice. But stopping dialysis is not the answer. Even if he's in a position where he wants to end his life, stopping dialysis won't be a nice way to go.

I hope you find some solace in knowing there's people reading your story and somewhat sharing your pain. Good luck with finding the best solution for you and your husband.

Hi there,

Thanks for reply @gilders. Much appreciated. Yes it’s much more complex than it seems. My husband was on PD years ago is no longer a candidate for peritoneal dialysis. He has had 2 failed fistulas since he started HD a year ago and only 1 good arm. He was told a month ago he has a 2% chance of being transplanted sube to his antibodies and recurring disease. On too of this he feels he has become a burden as his situation as become an economic strain..There so many factors so many facets of chronic disease people don’t talk about… and yes depression is a big part of the daily struggle not just for the I’ll person but also the caregiver when there is no outside help. Thanks for lending an ear !

Yes, I've known several who stopped dialysis and moved on to their next chapter. Ask questions. Blessings

HI.....Right now I am in the same boat..... I am so sick of being sick, my quality of life is non existent. I have been struggling with this for a few months now......to quit or not to quit. I don't want to die, But Ican't l live like this anymore. I read some of your replies and it opened my eyes just enough to get some things checked out....... depression..... malnutrition. So I will go on another day to get some of these things checked out. I hope that you find the answers you need

I do know people who stopped dialysis but were in their 70's or more. They were ready to move on to the next part of their lives and did expire after stopping dialysis. The also were cared for by Hospice.
