dialysis treatment

Hi I have been told by my doctor that I am going to need dialysis within the next few weeks, the hospital i attend at the moment is quite far away from where I live, does anyone know please how I can find out if there is a dialysis treatment centre or unit a bit nearer to where I live that can do it. This is going to be hard I am so nervous and scared of what my life will be like once dialysis treatment starts. I have 4 children so anyway I can make life a bit easier by having dialysis treatment nearer to home as got to help. Also has anyone performed Hemodialysis at home.?

Hi Sue

The nearest unit to you will be selected as will the best slot timings to meet your life. I started my dialysis in August and do the twilight stint which is 1800-2200, it suits me and my family life. I still manage to work across the UK and arrange to be there on time. Don't be scared its for the best.

Thank you for your reply I really hope I can find unit not too far from me as I dont drive, and I have 3 young children. I am hoping to be able too have it at home, I have an appointment with the hospital Tuesday week to discuss starting dialysis straight away. Best wishes to you and Thanks again for your reply. x

Hi Sue,Firstly have you considered home peritoneal dialysis?

Haemo dialysis is carried out at home in my Trust, East Lancashire subject to your house being suitable. They pay for any modifications if it is. You have to go on a long training period however, but having the machine at home you can do dialysis more often for shorter periods, which is much better for you. They even put a Skype Camera next to the machine so you can connect direct to the renal unit if you have a problem.

Hope it helps and hope it works out for you and you must think positive. People have adapted and have been on it for many years whereas the alternative to be brutal is death.

If you are intending to haemo at the Hospital the normal 3 times a week they will provide transport from your house to the hospital and back, as you aren't allowed to drive after the therapy as it can make you dizzy and light headed.

But this will all be explained to you at the hospital, so don't worry and all the best.

Just a point that does not really aptply to golden boy as he does nota drive, but the majority of patients (I ha t e that word but do not know another to describe us) drive themselves to and from dialysis without a problem.

How far away from the unit do you live? Mine is 12 miles away

I live in Hertfordshire, and I only know of the Hopital at th moment that has a unit which is about 30-40 minute drive away thats if their is no traffic. I need to find out if thei is a unit or clinic to to my home that offers Dyalisis. But if I am honest I am hoping to have it at home if possible while waiting for a kidney transplant.
