Glucometer is for self-monitoring. Unless we self-monitor, we don't know where we are. Most often, diabetes is asymptomatic i.e you don't have any symptoms. Glucometer gives us caution by showing the sugar-reading which is inside and not manifested outside for us to know. On the whole, its a useful device.

100% right. The best advice a diabetic can get is to have a glucometer and check frequently (initially at-least) with different diet and exercise to get the feel of his/her diabetic condition and how his/her body responds to different diets, fruits etc.

This will help him/her to make a right decision to control the diabetes.

It is very good and let me tell you even now a days doctors use glucometer only to check the sugar. Blood is clinically taken only when one has to go for HBA1C Test which tells you your sugar control for a period of last 3 months and I guess under 6.5 indicates good control of sugar. So glucometer is safe, convenient, easy to use and a tool that helps you to control better of your sugar levels. Cheers

Glucometer is good for self monitoring of Sugar level in your blood. Its good for keeping track as to what is happening. If not required urgently, once a week is good enough.

In addition to above answers which are all precise, you should also take lab-based blood (fasting and PP) regularly. The glucometer is only indicative but nevertheless important to have and to monitor levels. Use it before breakfast and dinner. You must be on 12 hourly dosages.

Also ensure that if you are checking PP sugar. PP is called Postprandial, i.e. sugar level after food. Dont check PP sugar before 2 hours after food.

The most reliable test is in LAB and LAB only. I have Bayer make glucometer. Out o fthe five discs that I used only the 4th one gave correct readings(compared to LAB figures). The rest three gave erratic results (stleast 120-140 higher than LAB figures)
