A Young Scientist From The Philippines Discover Potential Diabetes Cure In Aratiles

It could be true. I had one day eaten 4 or 5 of these fruits. The next day my sugar level was quite low. I kept looking back to see what change was there in my diet. This fruit was the only one. We need to see whether it controls or cures. Details of this study will be very useful. This fruit is available plenty in Bangalore. They have many trees on the road side.
where is it available in bangalore...what is the local name
Looks like each country in the following has astutely named the cherry after its own: Jamaica Cherry, Malaysia Cherry, Panama Cherry, Singapore Cherry, etc ...
Hmm, you could do the same and called it "Bangalore cherry / India cherry" !! At present, it's been called :
Tamil : Sarkarai Pala Maram, Seeni pala maram, Ten pazham தேன் பழம்
Telugu : Nakkaraegu
Kannada : Gasagase hannina mara
Hindi : Paanchara, Ten Pazham, Nakkaraegu
Marathi Paanchara पांचारा
Thanks for the info, Raj - further research yielded the following which you might want to take a look at below - note that not only are the fruit but also the leaf extracts are glucose lowering :
"Antihyperglycemic / Antioxidant / Leaves: Study evaluated Muntingia calabura leaves extracts for in vitro antioxidant and antidiabetic property in Streptozotocin-Nicotinamide induced type II diabetic rat model. In four complementary antioxidant assays, the ethanolic extract of leaves showed high phenolic and flavonoid content. Treatment of STZ-N induced type II diabetic rats with the extracts caused a significant reduction in fasting glucose level in a dose dependent manner. All the extracts showed dose-dependent antioxidant and anti-hyperglycemic activity with potential to protect against free radical medicated damages." Source : cloudmind.info/philippine-m...
Tamil Names: Sarkarai Pala Maram, Seeni pala maram, Ten pazham.

Thank you very much for posting the interesting information!
You're welcome, Praveen. I remember eating the fruit when playing around in the garden with my cousins. The tree certainly brings back pleasant memories of childhood and the fun my relatives and I had then. Not only the fruit but also the leaves (as tea infusion) and roots are antihyperglycemic, from what I read in the scientific literature.
