AS per DR : Pramod Kerkar, MD, FFARCS, A furuncle in common terms is known as a boil is common pathological skin condition and is caused by inflammation of the hair follicle and the sebaceous gland adjoining it. This boil or furuncle, when spreads throughout the body is termed as Furunculosis. This may be a benign condition but it causes a lot of problems for the affected individual both physically as well as cosmetically.

The rash formed due to Furunculosis is quite painful and gradually tends to form abscesses which are even more painful for the individual. Once the disease process has finished and healing phase starts these furuncles or boils leave scar behind them which if present in the face or other exposed parts of the body may pose as an embarrassment for the individual cosmetically.

Furunculosis is a condition which can gradually become chronic and may recur frequently. Once Furunculosis becomes chronic then it becomes extremely difficult to deal with them as the individual needs to take care of himself or herself constantly with periodic visits to the dermatologist and use preventive measures so as to cut down the duration of the disease process and lessen the chances of scar formation due to Furunculosis.

There are numerous factors that predispose an individual to Furunculosis. Some of these factors are a weak immune system, certain other skin diseases, stomach or intestinal problems. The most common bacterium responsible for development of furuncle and Furunculosis is staphylococci. It is very rare that Furunculosis is caused by any other microorganism.

People who have suffered from frostbite, who are obese, diabetic, and basically unhygienic or live in an unhygienic environment are more prone to getting Furunculosis than others. Furunculosis may occur in any part of the body but is usually seen to occur in places where the skin rubs against the clothes like neck, waist, hips, chest, and the like.

Furunculosis is a condition that takes a very long time to heal since it tends to recur very frequently and thus an individual needs to be very cautious and avoid any risk factor which may put him or her at risk for having recurrent Furunculosis.
