Hello
I am aware that H1ABC test gives results for 3 months. Is any one will get health history for 5 years ?
It does matter.Diabetes is a progressive disorder. It means, it gets more and more aggravated as you become older and becomes tougher to manage. To my knowledge, there is no way to scientifically to trace the diabetic history of a person.Medical profession considers how long one is a diabetic and if any diabetic complications are noticed.
If you are a diabetic since two years, there will not be any appreciable diabetic complications. You can manage your type 2 diabetes by diet and exercise.
If you are a diabetic, say 10 years, there will be diabetic complications such as peripheral neuropathy, dyslipidemia (high cholesterol level in the blood), erectile dysfunction, skin problems, unnoticed silent heart attack, microalbuminuria, gum problems, early onset on cataract etc.
In order to prevent such diabetic complications, you have to undergo the following medical laboratory tests at frequent intervals.
A: HbA1c. HbA1c is a lab test that shows the average level of blood sugar (glucose) over the previous 3 months. It shows how well you are controlling your diabetes.
B: Control your high Blood pressure, if any. Normal blood pressure- <120/80 mmHg.
C: Control your blood Cholesterol: Normal cholesterol < 200 mg/dL. LDL <100 mg/dL HDL > 40 mg/dL Triglyceride < 150 mg/dL.
D: Diabetic education. Dental check-up should be done in every 6 months.
E: Eye examination for glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cataract.
F: Foot examination
G: Glucose monitoring. Fasting or postprandial blood sugar may be checked daily and avoid foods that elevates blood sugar.
H: Health maintenance immunization against influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia.
I: Indications for specialty care. Heart, kidney, thyroid and eye should be checked periodically by concerned specialists.
