I normally check between 2 and 2.30 hours post food intake. I have been with this practice since last twenty years and I have through experience found that this time period gives me the near average levels leading to proper management of hypo or hyper positions. Trust this clarifies your query.

Sir

A new entrant to be diagnosed. kindly enlighten.

Is it 2 to 2.5 hours after any meal or specifically in the morning taking breakfast after doing fasting check.

Also is the regular medicine to be taken 30 minutes before breakfast as advised by doctor ?

What should be the general frequency of checking?

2 hrs after last bite.

2 hours from the start of the meal , that starting the first bite . That's what doctor told me , even the endocrimologist said the same .

but then by testing after 2 hrs you will never know how much you spiked between.

At 2 hours as a random check in case it's not known if you are a diabetic or not. At 2 hours none Diabetics will touch normal values. You can't subject everyone for costly and time consuming test.

that is after it's found that ppbs is abnormal.

so I guess it is just not sufficient to rely on just blood sugar test....but alongwith same urine sugar is also important...

If within that 2 hrs period if person got spike above 180....then it will be seen in urine test....

And person to person...and diet the time will vary...I guess it is very difficult to tell exact time....

It takes some time to have your meal. It is also not possible to go to a busy diagnostic lab and get the test done exactly after 2 hours. That is why it is common for doctors to prescribe a test between one and half and two hours from the end of the meal. Do what you are comfortable with, but do it consistently.

Sometimes 2hr blood sugar reading is normal. But prediabetes would not be diagnosed so 3 hr GTT is best and if blood sugar readings cross 160/ ( some consider 180) any time the person is prediabetic.

2Hr blood sugar is a screening test.

ogtt : 1 -2 -3 hrs blood sugar readings.

I prefer one more at half an hour.

Yes. Those taking insulin should keep a higher blood sugar to avoid hypos.. In addition to, if on insulin never do fasts. You have to take into account the body's stress also. For example, if you have fever or say common cold or if you have not taken enough sleep, then your body is under stress so you might need a little extra insulin. But then you have to check your blood sugar at that time before taking a shot.

Yes. A1c is more reliable than the random blood sugar levels.

hypo can kill you instantly or take you deep coma because if the blood sugar level goes below 60- 40 mg, then the brain gets damaged. Hyper is also harmful, but in the long run.

a little correction. In nonD the bs level touches normal value after 2hrs which is 120 at present. Not the highest pp.

Gtt is very useful in diagnosing prediabetics and the highest level of bs achieved by a D. This helps in deciding treatment and dosage of insulin.

if you ever found a diabetic in coma or comatose or sweating profusely on a road side first thing to give him is the glucose orally if he can take or by a drip and then shift him/ her to hospital. The symptoms i mentioned may be because of hypo. Though there may be many other causes but giving glucose is the first good thing you can do.

There are a 2hr and a 3hr gtt. A1c and gtt both have different significance.

A1c= average of 3 months. It doesn't show how high sugar spikes. Gtt is the answer. And that's what will decide the dosage and type of treatment as to which medicine, what dosage and if insulin in what dosages.

Yes you can't advice gtt every time so ppbs can be used instead of gtt.

yes. But you and i can understand the intricacies of D. There are many who don't and many others who don't want.

Just day before i was sitting with my friend's cousin. She was a bank employee and her husband a geo engineer. Both had diabetes. But she has s. cr levels of 10 and on dialysis. I casually asked about diet. She was on high carb diet and the treating doctor never advised a proper diet because he himself doesn't know. The understanding of many is " kha lo. Do goli jyada le lenge ya insulin thoda jyada le lenge.!!"

OGTT means more than one reading. Only 2hr reading as ppbs is for screening to know if a person is D or not and then as a follow up to know if and how the person is responding to the treatment.

Sometimes 2hr screening gives normal or unclear results as in prediabetics. Then we need to do gtt.
