Community Peer Support

Hi everyone,

I want to write a post to make it really clear what we hope for our site, on communities like Diabetes India.

HealthUnlocked prides itself on providing a positive atmosphere in all of it’s communities, in which all members are welcomed and have a safe, anonymous space to discuss their health experiences.

Most importantly, we want to promote a supportive relationship between community members, regardless of differences in opinion or personality.

We want to promote peer support.

Peer support is a mutual exchange of help and conversation based on “shared understanding, respect and mutual empowerment between people in similar situations” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peer_support

peerzone.info/sites/default... ).

Peer support does not require identical experiences or opinions, but consists of encouraging each other through common difficulties.

Unless an administrator is a healthcare professional, HealthUnlocked does not offer specialist expertise and does not replace the relationship between you and your doctor.

The discussions within our communities are members sharing and exploring their different perspectives and solutions with each other.

Members are encouraged to share their discoveries and to learn from each other.

Peer support should not be directive e.g.“This will work for you because it worked for me”. Instead, we expect for members to encourage each other to seek their own solutions and making sure the community feels supported along the way.

Members should understand that health challenges can affect people in different ways, and that health experiences are no less valuable because they are different from their own or because they are uncommon.

Members should strive to create a safe atmosphere for their peers, and show consideration for what might make others feel unsafe. This means being tolerant of conflicting views, avoiding judgment and accepting that no one member is “right” and has “all the answers”.

At it’s best, peer support should involve giving each other hope and the motivation to take up valued opportunities.

  • And MMBS/MD in online world sell their time on sites like healthcaremagic.com

Forums don't operate like that. Most forums including diabetes.co.uk have LCHF preachers and welcome there. Science believes in looking at numbers and not sticking to age old lies propagated through rigged research.

" It is simply no longer possible to believe much of the clinical research that is published, or to rely on the judgement of trusted physicians or authoritative medical guidelines. I take no pleasure in this conclusion, which I reached slowly and reluctantly over my two decades as an editor of The New England Journal of Medicine. "

  • Vesa:

Why not ask your developers to filter email addresses and telephone numbers through use of regex. I see few sellers having a free ride off forum's tail. Ideally, contact numbers and email addresses published for any commercial gains by anyone for anyone ojn a public forum is a clear cut case of SPAM. And, I see this happening very frequently these days. One LW seller from PUNE seems to have made a fortune as his contact numbers etc gets published here so frequently. We don't know who others are benefiting monetarily from these commercial transactions being facilitated from here. This seems to be turning into a money making platform for some.

Instead of reporting individually, I think your dev's can filter out such strings using regex/replace function in the code to filter out all such things from the front end.

  • Hi Vesa...

I think chat and group chat would really be useful...as many people are really interested in discussion with some of the peers...because we have to use another chat site or contact if want to discuss anything in detail...many discussions goes on like chat with certain set of people involved :)

Your  response will be highly appreciated
