The other day, someone I know informs me that US has successfully brought out a replacement for Insulin which should be taken ONLY once a year. Is it a fact, can some let me know?
Insulin manufacture to be stopped? - Diabetes India
Insulin manufacture to be stopped?
I do not think it is a fact,as far as I know.Must be wishful thinking.
Unlike many medicines, insulin currently cannot be taken orally because, like nearly all other proteins introduced into the gastrointestinal tract, it is reduced to fragments (even single amino acid components), whereupon all activity is lost. There has been some research into ways to protect insulin from the digestive tract, so that it can be administered orally or sublingually. While experimental, several companies now have various formulations in human clinical trials, and one, the India-based Biocon, has formed an agreement with BMS to produce an oral-insulin alternative.

Thank you Mr Nair. I went to the sites you mentioned. Actually I didn't think about improving the standard of the insulin, rather more in the line of a new product invented by genetic manipulation. I believe change in certain Diabetic gene( DNA) has been done successfully to eradicate Diabetes for good, which if not help us the present lot but will be a boon to the future generations.
