Check Post-prandial blood sugar (2 hours after taking food) daily and fasting blood sugar (FBS) level occasionally. (Normal: FBS level-- less than 100 mg/dL. PPBS-- less than 140 mg/dL.)
Periodical tests to be conducted by a diabetic patient:--
A: HbA1c. HbA1c is a lab test that shows the average level of blood sugar (glucose) over the previous 3 months. It shows
how well you are controlling your diabetes.

Most important thing is that blood sugar is kept kept at normal level or closest to it. How you achieve is not that important. Some may choose diet control, some may choose exercise, some others tablets, still others insulin injection etc. It may depend on the doctor as well as the health condition of the patient.
I was diabetic for only three years. By that time I cured it by the Long Wheat Mash Diet Regimen.
Usually people are testing only FBS & PPBS. Those may seem to be ok with medicines. In a day we have 24 hours, each hour has 60 minutes & each minute has 60 seconds. Blood sugar varies every instant depending each of your actions - like food, thought, feelings, work, sleep, dreams, speech, reading, writing etc. With food & emotions sugar levels will increase. With most others it will come down. By FBS & PPBS tests you get its value AT JUST TWO INSTANTS. This can be highly misleading.
Where as if you test HbA1c once in three months you will get a much clearer picture of your blood sugar over the previous three months.
When I became diabetic I designed a special diet for me and could cure my diabetes in just three years. Now some others are following it & are getting benefited. They named it Long Wheat Mash Diet. Recently one patient (20 years diabetic) could bring down his daily insulin injection from 99 units to 39 ( a reduction of 60) units within a short span of two months!
TAKING MEDICINES ALONE WILL NOT BRING DOWN BLOOD SUGAR ALWAYS. THAT IS WHY PATIENTS ARE FORCED TO MOVE FROM EXERCISE TO DIET CONTROL TO LOW DOSE TABLETS TO HIGHER DOSE TABLETS TO INSULIN INJECTION AND COMBINATIONS OF THESE. YOU HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR FOOD HABITS & LIFE STYLE ALSO TEMPORARILY TILL CURE.

Hi, insulin on its own has no side effects. How are his sugar levels and Hba1c? If controlled then no problems. However its always better to modify lifestyle and opt LCHF diet for diabetes management than depend on insulin/other medicines. I'm not aware of any supplements that control sugar levels! Its a metabolic disorder and lifestyle and diet modification is the key to successful control.
