Why you are sceptical about your doctors prescription.? in case you dont trust the Doctor go to another one with whom you have trust. Your Doctor is the best judge about your conditions and prescribe ur medicines which no one can contradict.

It is not possible to discuss about medication on a forum like this.Your doctor would have prescribed after conducting lots of tests and other criteria.Have confidence in your doctor.

Your doubt is whether you are type 1 diabetic or type 2 diabetic.

Oral hypoglycemic agents [such as metformin (generic name) Glycomet (brand name) in your case] is ineffective against type 1 diabetes. Only insulin is effective against type 1 diabetes. So it is 100% sure that you have type2 diabetes.

Metformin is used alone or with other medications, including insulin, to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and, therefore, cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). Metformin is in a class of drugs called biguanides. Metformin helps to control the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. It decreases the amount of glucose you absorb from your food and the amount of glucose made by your liver. Metformin also increases your body's response to insulin, a natural substance that controls the amount of glucose in the blood. Metformin is not used to treat type 1 diabetes (condition in which the body does not produce insulin and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood).

Normal ranges:--

Fasting blood sugar level (8 to 12 hour fasting) should be less than 100 mg/dL.

Post-prandial blood sugar level (2 hours after taking food) should be less than 140 mg/dL.

You are type 2 only. Your sugar levels are almost under control. Take care of food intake and you will be within limits with Glycomet 500. You have not indicated as to how many times you are talking Glycomet. It is to be taken after food.
