We are all fond of of these things but gave up willingly.Diabetes is as a disorder that gets worse and worse as time goes along.Even medication ,exercises and control over diet will give you less and less relief. The stuff you are fond of adds unnecessary calories and spikes the blood sugar in the short term and drops suddenly after some time.Alcohol also aggravates diabetic neuropathy to which all diabetics are susceptible. So better give up totally or restrict to very special occasions.Diabetic management is a tough life, but that is how it is.

as ur very fond of these things, i suggest if u eat ice cream don't eat one meal. If u take one peg whiskey miss one meal. Of couse u won't take wisky and bear at the same time then forget food for that day. Better avoid all this.Mind u If ur bed ridden it is hell.

friends I found this info about diabetic ice-cream ( sugar free icecream, tesca )

I am not sure if it is available in India commercially. But the recipe is available on the net.

what I understand is if you carefully choose the milk ( low fat) and sugarfree instead of regular sugar, you can minimize the calories.

You may eat your ice-cream and have it! :-) *** note please check with your dietician as well before you actually eat!

Ofcourse, you may have to exercise /walk extra and avoid starchy food as well.

BTW: I missed your beer part.

Beer by the way;, is high calorie stuff. Better avoid it. I understand a moderate hard liquor is better than beer.

there are diverse views on this. but in general, mind the calories and drink in moderation. You need to discuss this with your doctor, and I am not a doctor.

Excellent answer, asku2013. Finally, someone who is not blindly and irrationally biased against alcohol. Cheers !!

In Delhi BTW is a good brand for Tikkis and snacks. I luv to eat sometime at cost of my sugar.

Read Dr. Bernstein's book titled " Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution".

Read the book and become knowledgeable yourself. You will not get a rational answer on these boards from what I have figured as most people in India are biased against alcohol and meat. And, unfortunately, most doctors in India are just bloody quacks out to make money as quickly as they can by recommending expensive tests and drugs.

The only solution is to educate yourself by reading from an honest knowledgeable doctor who has no skin in the game.

Managing diabetes means almost becoming an expert on on medical issues. We should not take the foods that aggravate hypoglycemia index or weakens our natural stamina. Normal ice cream is bad for diabetes and liquors weaken our stamina/resistance. Ret is your own decision.

Thanks, rustic guy :-)

Avoid ice-cream, whisky and beer for the rest of your life to avoid diabetic complications.

Do not eat at all:--

Sugar, jam, syrups, honey, sweets, chocolates, fruit juices, ice creams, cold drinks, glucose drinks, cakes and pastries, sweet biscuits, puddings and protein powder with sugar.

Here are some other ways that alcohol can affect diabetes:--

* While moderate amounts of alcohol can cause blood sugar to rise, excess alcohol can actually decrease your blood sugar

level -- sometimes causing it to drop into dangerous levels.

* Beer and sweet wine contain carbohydrates and may raise blood sugar.

* Alcohol stimulates your appetite, which can cause you to overeat and may affect your blood sugar control.

* Alcohol can interfere with the positive effects of oral diabetes medicines or insulin.

* Alcohol may increase triglyceride levels.

* Alcohol may increase blood pressure.

* Alcohol can cause flushing, nausea, increased heart rate, and slurred speech.

Periodical tests to be conducted by a diabetic patient:--

A: HbA1c. HbA1c is a lab test that shows the average level of blood sugar (glucose) over the previous 3 months. It shows

how well you are controlling your diabetes.

B: Control your high Blood pressure, if any. Normal blood pressure- <120/80 mmHg.

C: Control your blood Cholesterol: Normal cholesterol < 200 mg/dL. LDL <100 mg/dL HDL > 40 mg/dL Triglyceride < 150 mg/dL.

D: Diabetic education. Dental check-up should be done in every six months.

E: Eye examination for glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cataract.

F: Foot examination (Diabetic neuropathy and diabetic foot ulcers)

G: Glucose monitoring. Fasting or postprandial blood sugar may be checked daily and avoid foods that elevates blood sugar.

H: Health maintenance immunization against influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia.

I: Indications for specialty care. Heart, kidney and liver should be checked periodically by concerned specialists.

* Overall, the risk for death among people with diabetes is about twice that of people of similar age without diabetes.

* Adults with diabetes have heart disease death rates about 2 to 4 times higher than adults without diabetes.

* The risk for stroke is 2 to 4 times higher among people with diabetes.

Thanks for these Good Inputs. These are really valuable Mr. Gangadharan Nair. Adding to these inputs let me suggest that a good active work out like brisk walk ,Yoga or any other physical exercise can burn your extra calories . Further, one must ensure to have a good night sound sleep for at least 7 to 8 hours. for this you need to go to bed in time and keep out the stress and strain from your life. Also last but least, you have normal motions and clear the bowls.

All these need to be managed by ourselves and closely monitored. Extra Calorie means extra work out to burn the calories is the rule. if this is not balanced even Insulin do not work

. These will definitely bring down the blood sugar levels to control .

So, friends once in a while come out of restrictions and enjoy life, but compensate with extra work outs. -) Cheers..!!

you can not take any portion of sugar direct in to your body, Direct sugar is as well as POISON for you further to the same BEER is very Dangerous as far as GAS formation in the body and high in Cholostrol and at the end of th eday whisky is also very Danger for your Kidney function.

if you wish you can take red dry wine glass or two which will also help you for better cholostrol and Digestion

Once in a while enjoying them is quite OK. But be wary of portions. I am a diabetic and I also enjoy ice cream, Indian sweets (actually they are very sugar spiking, except Bengali Sandesh), alcoholic beverages etc, but in moderation. If I take ice cream then I would just take two spoonful maybe and if I take alcohol/ whiskey then I would take just a measured 2 pegs, beers I avoid but if I am sometimes under "public demand", then I restrict myself to just a standard glass & not a bottle. But when I do consume such things, I go easy on other foods and avoid rice completely. Don't get psyched and alarmed that diabetics have such problems that prevents them from enjoying good food & things in life. The key to diabetes management is MODERATION & once you practice it, you would remain OK. Cheers & sweet tooth. Oh try to remain stress free & your sugar would start getting towards normal levels.

Occasionally some sweet is not an issue. But smoking/drinking --- strict no no.

Ice cream part, check with medfree, on LCHF angle.

Whiskey, ocassional peg or two is fine as long as you can have sprouts and salads to go with.

Bear, i dont know, it can maul you. :-)

Beer is highly calorific: i may leave it to Jambhavans like medfree, shooter George and others to explain.

All the best!!!! :-))
