5.7 glucose reading after eating morning snack

Hi

I want to check if a finger prick glucose reading of 5.7 after eating light snacks in the morning (this was well after breakfast the reading was taken at 10.50 when I started to feel light headed and woozy and generally agitated - breakfast usually I eat around 7am)

is this a normal reading after snacks? I do suffer from bad sugar lows but Dr thinks I am fine, getting nowhere fast and trying to establish why I have these episodes of sugar lows, feeling lightheaded, drinking a lot of water constantly as I am always thirsty and I have exhaustion which is sickening.

Any ideas?

thank you :)

Hi,

Without a lot more information, It's difficult to say whether 5.7 is a normal reading for you after having eaten snacks. Maybe carry out some fasted bg readings as well as postprandial tests so that you can get a better understanding of what is going on.

5.7 after eating is considered to be within the non-diabetic range, so I would think it very unlikely that you have either type 1 or 2 diabetes. The constant thirst and exhaustion are typical symptoms of a high blood sugar, whilst the light-headedness is more typical of low bg, although can occur with higher readings too. It could be you suffer from reactive hypoglycaemia which can occur in non-diabetics, however I think a lot more investigation is needed.

I don’t know what 5.7 is when I take my show that it runs around 100 in the a.m. But with the extreme thirst it sounds like your diabetes is not under control. I am considered pre-diabetic from steroids and I am doing my best to keep it that way. You might need a second opinion.

If I understand, your blood sugar reading of 5.7 is four hours after your light breakfast. First of all 5.7 is not a low reading. It may be that you have taken carb-rich breakfast, in which case your blood sugar will move from very high to low and after every 2/3 hrs you will feel hungry. Your blood sugar may have gone through lower than 5.7 say at 2hrs which is possible on sugar-rich meal.

Please include more protein and healthy fat in your breakfast and see if helps. Based on my personal experience it should help. Avoid sugar including simple carbohydrate altogether.

Try traditional British Breakfast without bread and baked beans. Bacon, fried eggs and Tea/Coffee. No fruit juice.
