Hi Chelles I am sorry to hear that you have not been given all the information and help you need to control your diabetes. If you are having trouble getting a meter from your GP.
If you go to the diabetes.co.uk website you can get a free up to date meter. You just give a few details so that they can send it to you plus like this site you get lots of support and information. You can even download a fantastic cookbook which is especially for diabetes sufferers.
Hi Chelles,
I had the same problem as my clinic wouldn't provide a meter for me to test my blood sugar levels yet they expect us to have control of our diabetes. It all comes down to costs as the test strips are expensive and GP's don't want to write prescriptions for them. I bought a tester for £15. from Boots and a nurse approached me whilst I was deciding which one to buy and then a second time in another branch of Boots whilst buying more testers another nurse approached me to say you can get those on prescription. I told them both, not when your practice won't provide you with a meter because you are Type 2 and not on insulin
I have since been given one as I was having a problem with one of the medications, not Metformin. I kept having hypos and it was the medication that was causing the problem, I have since had the medication changed, at least I did receive a meter from my clinic.
Hope this helps. Good luck and take care, S xx
I have actually read the comments from others and confirm to you that those are right and very helpful, i would like, however, encourage you to accept your condition and learn more about how to tame and control it. Avoid being in hypos !
