Hi Alison, thanks for your reply. My diabetes nurse gave me a book full of information and a small chart to keep in my wallet to help me choosing the right products to buy. It advises when an item is low, medium or too high in fats, sugar etc. It is colour coded the same as the packages on the shelf in the supermarket. I find that to be helpful as well as the list of foods which are best to eat. I do find having to eat fruit or all food at one time to take with the medication. I was told to have 3 meals a day, no more no less and no snacks.

My sister has been diabetic for many years and said she was never told no snacks.

Good luck, hope you can get a book from your nurse too or you could find something from diabetes UK.

Take care, Sue xx

Diet for diabetics,a concept that is prevalent today is fast changing. Eat what you like with certain limitations and restrictions. Please adopt an easy going ,tension free life style with a bit physically activity, good nights sound sleep and enough hydration and you are there, leading a perfectly normal life.

Assuming you're a Type 2, follow the Newcastle diet and try to reverse your diabetes immediately. Do not follow the "advice" of doctors, nurses, Diabetes Associations etc. Like cancer, it is an industry. If there was no maintenance of your condition, these people would be out of a job. Reversing your diabetes would be like turkeys voting for Christmas. The health "professionals" won't like it, but they're not the ones whose limbs and eyesight are at risk. Get hold of a copy of Dr Richard Bernstein's book on diabetes. In it he says, where is the sense in eating carbs only to have to take medication to deal with it. He's a Type 1 and has to inject, but he's not eaten fruit for decades (I don't know that I could be that disciplined) however it's an informative read.

there is no specific diet needed for diabetics except to watch your carb content! Look at labels, ignore the "of which sugars" content of carbs, sugar is a carb and already counted into the total carb content. I try to keep to 150g of carbs per day with 45g for snacks (if needed!), some days a I have a few more, some days less its all a question of everything in moderation.

Ask you diabetic team to send you on an educationall course like the xperthealth.org.uk one. I did this in 2013 and did a refresher course this year, its very informative and you get a book explaining everything. Lots of long term diabetics who were on my course had never had any education before and it was certainly and eye opener for them.

Try and do some exercise each day, that helps too. Some people may recommend the Low Carb High Fat diet and if this suits you fine, but always check with your GP first in case you have any problems that would be exacerbated by too much fat. We all need carbs for energy but eating a bit more protein will help keep you fuller longer.

Good luck.

I agree with Blue2, that's the best advice you could have. If you have a low carb diet you can reverse type 2 diabetes.

A diet consisting of meat, veg, dairy products such as cheese, butter, oils, cream none of which have no or little carbs in are ideal for diabetics.

Be aware of health professionals who will recommend a diet consisting of high carb/low fat diets which are bad for all diabetes. Remember any carbohydrates will raise your blood sugars which are bad for you.

There is a recent study where it is found out that intestinal bacteria specially ' Akkermansia muciniphila ' is associated with obesity , diabetes and inflammation . When this bacteria increases it results in reduction of inflammation, repairs of disturbed metabolism which is associated with obesity and diabetes . It is probiotic bacteria .High fat diet affects the gut microbial community and Akkermansia muciniphila levels reduce with continuous feeding of high fat diet.Chronic high fat feeding affects adipose tissue metabolism also . Continuous high fat feeding leads to insulin resistance and increased levels of triglycerides and leptin . Right now the supplements of Akkermansia are not available as far as my knowledge and information go . But this bacteria grows with liberal intake of Dandlion greens , chicory root , wheat bran , Asparagus , garlic , onion ,Banana and codliver oil . One can also take homeopathic reparations of herbs like ocimum , phyllantus amarus , tinaspora , mangifera indica , pterocarpus marspium , aegle mermolos , Aloevera , Gymnema which give permanent relief from obesity and diabetes . Diabetes is a multifactorial disease rather disorder which needs multithereutic approach. It is mainly carbohydratic metabolism .But continuous high fat feeding is not the panacea . Prolonged intake of high fat diet could lead to schezophrenia , Alzhemers , vitiligo and some other neurological problems . The guide line is calory limited balanced food intake rich in minerals , vitamins and other nutrients . This probiotic benefit is available in the use of pomegranate extract ,cranberry extract and fish oils also.

Deficiencies of iron , zinc , selenium , manganese , potassium , chromium , magnesium , all have a say in the onset of diabetes . Diet consisting these things would contribute to health . Diabetes is a metabolic disorder and not a disease as such.
