Omitting salt from your diet doesn't work overnight. You don't say how high your BP was at diagnosis. Just one high reading in the surgery isn't a definition of hypertension, you should be offered a 24 hr monitor to diagnose it. There is also the question of 'white coat syndrome' at the surgery.
Life style is definitely the best option: walking briskly every day for at least half an hour, cutting out salt and alcohol and losing weight if you need to. If at the end of a month or so it is still high then you will need medication. If you keep to the lifestyle changes you will probably find you only need a low dose.
My own BP was 163/93 at diagnosis 2 years ago and with those changes I made and the lowest dose of Losartan I can average between 125/75 to 130/80. My dr is happy with that. I did buy myself a monitor and I take my own BP twice a day and keep a record. Every few months I show the dr what my numbers have been.
I know they say 120/80 is the optimum figure to aim for but a lot depends on your age too. 140/87 really isn't so high and I would have thought you could improve on that yourself by adopting a better lifestyle if you need to, before going on medication. Also I'm not sure if you are male or female. I'm a 72 yr old female and my dr said to aim for an average of 135/85, taking the BP twice a day and twice each time with 2 mins between readings. I take mine first thing in the morning [when it is usually highest] and during the evening when it is invariably lower. When I was diagnosed I was as cross as a wasp and was determined to all I could to sort the problem - I gave up salt [something I never imagined I could do!] drink alcohol only rarely, bought a dog to walk daily, and lost weight. All of those things helped my arthritic knee too. I still needed tablets but had the dose reduced almost a year ago to the lowest possible and I can keep my average BP around 125/80.
patient.co.uk is another website where they have a specific forum for hypertension where you might get better informed. Best of luck.
