Type 2 or 1?

Wondering if someone can settle a slight disagreement hubby and I are having.........

Hubby is currently type 2 but will soon have to go on insulin as his sugars have got out of control. He says that once he's on insulin, he becomes type 1. I say he'll still be type 2 but insulin dependant. So who would you say is right please???

I HAV ALWAYS BEEN LED TO BELIEVE TYPE ONE IS INSULIN CONTROLLED TYPE 2 IS CONTROLLED WITH TABLETS AND DIET

Still type 2. Been type 2 for 24 years. Several years back I was switch to two types of insulin (Fast & slow). Yes I make insulin, just a very poor quality, plus weight and other factors. Type one is when you don't have the ability to make any insulin.

dwitt has it. But you could check with your medic or look on NHSchoices to make sure..

Type 2 you're making insulin (it acts as a key) but the lock in the cells doesn't work, usually because they're clogged with fat. Type 1 the pancreas doesn't work. (islets of Langerhans)

You are right, of course! Once diagnosed as Type 2, you will never be type 1. If blood sugar levels are not controlled.you will require insulin.

You are right Jinger. Type 1s have no ability to make their own insulin, type 2s make some insulin and there can come a point with some T2s when their body doesn't make enough to cope with what they are eating and the tablets no longer keep things in balance and they then have to go onto insulin. My best friend is T2 on insulin as was my late mum, my sister and I are both T2 on tablets and diet.

I would suggest that your husband asks to go on an Xpert course through his diabetic team and learn about diabetes, you could also look at controlling his carbs (which turn to glucose in the body and therefore raise blood glucose levels). He could also go onto the Diabetes.org.uk website where there is a great deal of information and help for all diabetics including educational information.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

Ceejayblue - unfortunately our CCG doesn't offer any courses like that. We can only rely on our GPs, or the doctors/nurses at the local hospital's diabetic clinic. Unfortunately the only way I'll be able to control what he eats is if I sew his mouth shut! :P

i was always led to believe this but when i clarified it with my doctor that i am on insulin but am in fact a type 2 diabetic.it is purely because i cannot control my sugars without the insulin. what i did actually find was that i put on a lot of weight when i went on insulin purely because my sugar levels were being controlled but i was not really watching my diet and portion sizes.sorted this out and with gentle exercise lost four stone in twelve months.
