Information wanted for blood sugar levels

Hello I am writing this for my husband who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about a year ago. He is 80 and was prescribed Metformin as he did not want to drastically change his diet. The first medication did not suit him so they changed it to slow release and that was better. However over the past three months he has had recurrent stomach problems and generally felt unwell and depressed so he decided to stop the slow release Metformin and the change was remarkable his stomach cleared up and his mood lightened unbelievably. He kept track of his blood sugar with an Acucheck and the perameters have remained in the 5.3 to 5.7 range and he would like advice on whether to use diet instead of drugs and has anyone had this sort of experience. He has lost 8lbs over the year. Could this have helped? Any help would be great because our GP is very tablet minded!!

First of all, we need to understand diabetes from a new point of view. For example, someone who lives with diabetes takes a glucometer to check the blood glucose and finds it at 200. What does reading 200 reflect? That is what we need to understand.

Hello,

What is the unit of measurement (5.3 to 5.7)?

home test meters are not very accurate!!

What was the reason for checking for diabetes?

As we get older the numbers the doctors use need to change. There is a new theory that as people get older the numbers for blood tests have to change.

I would discuss this with your doctor and asked the question why a person who is 80 needs medication which may give side effects!!!

5.3 is the UK measurement mmol/L to 5.7 is equivalent to 95-104 mg/dL (US). Those are great numbers. My doc wants me under 140 (7.8 UK). Normal range should be between 3.9-7.2 UK or (70-130 US). There is an online converter available.
