My husband has type 2 diabetes now managed with Metformin, Pioglitazone 15gm, Insulin Nova rapid & Lantus. He is feeling stressed because he is not sure how much insulin to inject versus carbs and food eaten.
He has a Libre sensor how much variation in levels should there be when he has eaten? Is the aim for it to be under 10 or is that an average.
He has just been diagnosed with proliferative Diabetic retinopathy .
Advice or sources of information would be helpful.

I'm very sorry to hear about your husband's Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy. Be sure to get his eyes tested often.
The insulin ratio, I believe, is dependent on the type of insulin. There are several types ranging from short-acting to very long-acting. You absolutely need to discuss this with your husband's diabetes nurse or doctor. Trying to get the dosage here could do more harm than good.
As for the Libra sensor, remember, the results on those can be up to 15 minutes behind your husband's actual blood. If you are worried, you can always do a finger prick test too which has more immediate results.
Thank you his diabetes team have never given him anything objective like this article which is completely what we needed. They have just told him it is trial and error which does not seem to help him. At least I feel armed with some objective information now. Thank you so much
I am glad that the information is helpful to you, though I am very disappointed that his diabetes nurse couldn't and still hasn't provided something similar. Had he trialled his way to very low blood glucose, he could be lying in a diabetic coma right now. I would strongly recommend making a complaint to anyone who will listen.
The diabetes nurse can also sign post him to an online course, I can’t remember the website address, which teaches carb counting. I also find that doing some form of exercise everyday helps with average glucose levels hugely. Even a short walk or Pilates class. Don’t even need to get sweaty!
