I'm sure no one on this site suffers from constipation (YEA, RIGHT).

At any rate I'm curious to know if you use something on a regular basis (pardon the pun) to prevent constipation or treat is as it occurs.

please don't listen to every doctor who pushes pills for everything. The more natural way is through certain foods which specifically help constipation. They are cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, artichokes and a few others. I eat at least one or two of each of these every day. I'm never constipated. Try it.

Janab you are lucky. Have fruit and veg daily but still bunged up - full if it! I find lactolose is the only thing that works for me without being harsh.

Well, why is this site called Parkinsons Movement?

All puns aside, I find the main difficulty is my body doesn't want to act. Bowel movements require muscles to act and if these are reluctant to move then you are "constipated". Diet is important, as Janab says, but if your body don't want to, you are stuck.

I find it is important to not strain too much, try to ensure that you get to the loo immediately you feel the need and try to match it with your "up" times. If you are on a downer, then you won't achieve anything.

I have had Laxido prescribed but found that it made things too loose -- given that I was on a reasonable diet anyway.

Good Luck, and thanks for raising a difficult subject. It is impossible to discuss this with spouse or off-spring - they find it distasteful!

You are welcome. This site is the best for sharing and caring with people who are truly "walking the walk" with you.

High fiber breakfast cereals, like Cheerios or mini-wheats, strong coffee, and tomatoes keep me pretty regular.

Lucky you all who are finding a high fiber diet adequate!!!

Those with more stubborn situations, type "constipation" in the search window and you'll find lots or references and ideas to try!

My husband only takes care of it when it occurs. I try to encourage him to eat rasin-bran daily which helps him. But he doesn't like to. He takes prune juice when it happens and a stool softener.

Diet and stool softeners works well.

Hi Tlongmire,

The holistic way that I read is to drink as much water as you can in ONE HALF hour, and you will have immediate results. Secondly, I as a woman take a mega dose of calcium with magnesium. That will help. Take Calcium Magnesium pills at night, but go easy on the dose at first or you will be up alot that night with stools like water.

Watch what you eat. I am actually feeling bound up because today--I ate a few peanuts-had no idea they would have that reaction. I made a corn chowder as well and the corn could be the problem.

If you must take meds, Phillips milk of magnesium is best because it IS gentle. I read recently that you should not take stool softeners. why? They didn't say.

I had a hprrible bout off it when I my doc tried to sub Lyrica for Neurontin. It was horrible.

As everyone knows. drinking a warm cup of coffee tends to work for alot of people. DON'T strain. That will cause hemorrhoids which will then be chronic.

The child's pose in yoga helps too because it compresses the abdomen. GOOD LUCK! Be patient ,it will pass.

I find that if I have a large handful of sultanas with my breakfast cereal, Im ok for a day or 2. My GP has prescirbed MOVOCAL, but its like I imagine a mix of lemon flavoured soapy water would taste! Its awful. But in desperate times it works.

My husband must limit his green leafy veggies because he has DVT and atrial fib. He is on warfarin and too much thickens his blood so diet other than fiber is a balancing act. To help him stay regular he takes Herblax- a natural senna based product from Shaklee. He also drinks a lot of water because any degree of dehydration affects his blood pressure.

Bran flakes every morning and dried plums (prunes) in the evening. So far so good.
