My father 76 year old has his parkinson is somewhat under control. He takes mucuna 4 times a day and is generally physically okay.
His tremor is a lot better than it used to be and he does his daily exercises. He still at work, now from home. The only thing that bothers him is his constipation.
Last year he was hospitilised for a bowel obstruction. I think since then hes developed an anxiety around constipation.
Hes tried every laxative on planet earth and is obsessed with his stomach. He tells me his stomach controls his day and doesnt allow him to socialise as much.
He said its either constipated or he feels like he needs to run to the bathroom every hour and only a little bit comes out.
Im worried he might be misusing his laxatives out of fear.
any advice?

My sister who has PD has had chronic constipation for decades before she was diagnosed (she is 65 now). She tried everything under the sun but nothing worked. However, when she started cycling on a stationary bike or walking on a treadmill or exercising on a stair climber/master, she all of a sudden has daily bowel movements which is a miracle for her. We subsequently discovered that exercises that involve circular motion of the lower limbs, i.e. cycling, climbing the stair master etc. help her bowel movement. Hope this is helpful.
my husband recently had a bout of constipation. What works for him is try not to sit for long. Always keep moving throughout the day. No meat or dairy every second day (push it through alternate days with beans, lentils, raw cabbage salad and chickpeas.)
inulin has helped my husband too. Lots of kiwi fruits, passion fruits and all the summer red fruits too. The GP had given him a gentle laxative called Cosmocol but he doesn’t often need it.
hi! My HWP struggled with constipation as well. Magnesium Glycinate each night as well as exercise 3-5 days a week helps a lot. There is also some research on probiotics you may fins helpful, although it cause some additional GI issues to start. Getting the gut microbiom is important. How about his diet? What does he eat ? This is also a big factor.
I struggle with a similar constipation terror described here. Have been trying everything. I've been vegan for over a decade, and just finished two months of FLorè probiotics supposedly designed for me. No change. My next attempt will be cascara sagrada. And I am seriously considering a month at True North since a good friend has been there for nearly a month, and is raving about her results. For me it feels very much like a muscle weakness issue.
Your father is justified in his concern especially as he has had a bowel obstruction. Constipation needs to be monitored and not allowed to get a grip. This is a good summary of treatment.
Try eating a serving of Jell-O twice a day once in the morning and once in the evening for at least a week and see what happens. It worked for me, I go at least every other day. 🥊
