Low dhea-s in parkinsons patient with dementia

My father was diagnosed with Parkinsons and sudden onset of dementia following a bout of covid 19 2 years ago. He is not very responsive to levodopa after that and after several consults with neurologists have found no other solutions.

Tam some tests based on PD panel by Laura Mischley, and gave him methyl b12/folate along with minerals and glutathione/curvumin as homocysteine was off the charts. This has helped lower homocysteine however his DHEA sulfate is also very low 32 ug/dl and remains low.

I was wondering what else i could test or supplement. I read about exogenous dhea supplements and msm to improve sulfation but couldnt find much else . Any help appreciated

Cskhan, you should ask Dr. Mischley what she would recommend for DHEA supplements for your father. She prescribed it to me in low dosage the first time I saw her. However, DHEA is dangerous for anyone who has a history of prostate or breast, or other forms of cancer. Also, from what I understand, DHEA supplementation dosages are based on other several factors as well. Good luck.

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that serves as a precursor to other hormones, including testosterone and estrogen. Here are some natural ways to support and potentially increase DHEA levels:

Healthy Diet:

Healthy fats: Include sources of healthy fats like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil, which are important for hormone production.

Protein: Ensure adequate protein intake from sources like lean meats, fish, beans, and legumes.

Micronutrients: Consume a variety of fruits and vegetables to ensure sufficient intake of vitamins and minerals essential for hormone synthesis.

Regular Exercise:

Engage in regular physical activity, including both aerobic exercises (like walking, running, and swimming) and resistance training (like weight lifting). Exercise can help regulate hormone levels and support adrenal health.

Stress Management:

Chronic stress can negatively impact adrenal function and hormone levels. Practices such as mindfulness meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, and other relaxation techniques can help manage stress.

Adequate Sleep:

Ensure sufficient and high-quality sleep, as sleep is crucial for hormonal balance. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night and maintain a regular sleep schedule.

Herbal Supplements:

Some herbs and adaptogens are believed to support adrenal health and hormone balance. These include:

Ashwagandha: Known for its adaptogenic properties, it may help balance stress hormones.

Rhodiola Rosea: Another adaptogen that may help improve resilience to stress.

Maca Root: Often used to support hormonal balance.

Healthy Body Weight:

Maintaining a healthy body weight can support overall hormonal balance. Both obesity and being underweight can disrupt hormone levels, including DHEA.

Limit Alcohol and Avoid Smoking:

Excessive alcohol consumption and smoking can negatively impact hormone levels and overall health.

Consult a Healthcare Professional:

Before starting any new supplements or significant lifestyle changes, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice and, if necessary, test DHEA levels to monitor changes.

Implementing these natural approaches can help support adrenal health and potentially increase DHEA levels.
