Hi gang. Over the past several months I have developed quite bad eczema, mostly on my forearms and lower legs. It’s a real pain in the ass and beginning to get on my nerves!😬 I’ve always been prone to this condition but it’s sudden return and it being sited on the lower limbs is unusual. Does anybody think it’s linked to PD?

Thanks to all respondents 😊

It is possibly caused by food intolerance. May I suggest that you have your food allergies tested? You could also try the carnivore diet as that’s basically the elimination of all the things that might cause eczema. You will probably find that you score highly on foods that you really like for example eggs, wheat, lactose, cheese, nuts…

Hi. I had terrible skin issues (severe itching, flaking etc) for about 5 years. It coincided with rapid progression of early onset PD so I also wondered if related.

I tried so many things and eventually discovered that I could minimise the skin issues through a highly restricted diet and topical steroids but it wasn't a long term solution.

I made a 7 week trip to south India earlier this year where I ate only local/street food. I also followed a 1 month course of oral antihistamine while there (recommended by an Indian dermatologist.)

From about the 3rd week in India my skin returned to normal and has stayed that way since.

I don't know whether it was the antihistamines, the change in gut microbes from eating local food, the climate (humid and hot), or something else. But hopefully something there may help you, or anyone else suffering from similar issues. Good luck!

I really only had eczema once, some years before PD. I had it bad for a month. I was stressed at work, working 12 hour days. I was fortunate enough to find a less stressful job, had a week off chilling in the sun and it went.I know stress makes my PD worse. So Id suggest stress may be a link to both conditions.

Yes, I can only conclude the same but tbh, little has changed in my life: still have PD. Maybe the fact that the sun has completely vanished in England for what used to be called spring and summer has a bearing 😂?

have you checked your vitamin d levels?

Have you eliminated milk?

And have you used any new cleaning products, soaps etc, or has your water supply had chrlorine added to it?

My friend had pretty bad eczema from dairy, but then she tried gluten free and her milk allergy went away! Turned out gluten was the culprit.

My husband’s eczema cleared up in Hawaii. Sun, salt water and no stress. Vitamin D through the skin which is the way our bodies maybe were intended to receive it?

I think plenty of things might improve if we were able to relax there and experience some sun. 😊

Hi jeeves19

“Leaky gut” is the phenomenon of increased intestinal permeability wherein the junction between the intestine and the gut that prevents spillage of larger particles into the bloodstream is affected. This dysfunction often triggers an inflammation and immune response from the body, which can result in eczema flare-ups.

Gut abnormalities are present in pretty much all neurological and psychiatric conditions including Parkinson’s. Dr Natasha Campbell McBride (from UK) has done extensive work on Gut issues and brain issues - you may want to look up her work – GAPS diet.

Allergy tests may not be accurate because of leaky gut – when my son had allergy tests for eczema, when a child, pretty much all food items he had the previous week showed up as “allergies”.

Couple of things that may help (that my family have been following for years - which are fundamental in GAPS diet that “heal and seal the gut”. We moved on keto now, but still do these):

- Sauerkraut/sauerkraut juice with every meal (probiotic)

- Chicken stock/bone broth as side drink with every meal or as much possible

You can try probiotic supplements too – but better to get it from food.

Hope you feel better!
