High doses of B12

Can one overdose on B12? Can it be given in mega doses like B1? Is it advisable for PWP to take extra high doses of B12? My WWP recently had a blood test and her B12 levels were only slightly higher by about 10% of the recommended levels.

Enough is enough, it seems to me. Why would you want to apply 'mega' doses??? It is more important to check all your other B vitamins and ensure a balance is present due to their interaction and promotion of absorption, including B1 and B12.

B12 is difficult for the body to absorb, so it makes sense to take vitamin B12 in abundance. I take about one half of one of these daily which amounts to 1.5 mg:

Thanks Park bear for your response. According to the information on the link you posted, a 3,000mcg pill is 126,000% the daily recommended dose. Surely this is a mega dose and answers my query. Not that I intend going this high but a gradual increase may prove beneficial. I shall post the results in due course.

yes, too much b12 can be harmful. You definitely want to keep it on the high end of the range, but too much can cause worsening of symptoms. There was an article I was trying to find that scientists proved that, but I can’t find it.

I have seen many articles suggesting a benefit of B12 for Parkinson's but recently I saw an article that suggested that too high of a level could cause problems. Since B12 is a cobalamin if the person has an allergy to cobalt then there can be some problems. There are some forms of B12 that are better absorbed but digestive issues can sometimes interfere with absorption and there are B12 shots, prescription B12 nasal spray, B12 sublingual forms that can help improve absorption.

"The natural forms of B12 are called methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin, and hydroxycobalamin. These forms have a greater bioavailability (absorption) and are considered the preferred form in supplements."

Thank you all for answering my query on B12. Boscoejean, your links were particularly helpful and I would encourage everyone to have a look at them. Thanks.

This company in Australia have developed a b12 that you rub on your skin, which cuts past the digestive system.

I'm not sure about overdoses, but if you keep and eye on your levels, with regular health check from your GP, this shouldn't be a problem.
