Topic: The article discusses a finding that decongestants, a common active ingredient in many oral cold and flu medications, are ineffective for treating nasal congestion.
Summary: An advisory panel of the US Food and Drug Administration has found that decongestants like phenylephrine, when used as recommended over a few days, provide no meaningful relief of nasal congestion symptoms caused by the common cold. - This finding could lead to removal of dozens of decongestant cold medicines from the US market.
- Common brands containing phenylephrine as the active ingredient may no longer be available for purchase in the US.
- The article provides context on the FDA review process and implications of the advisory panel's determination.
Duh. I could have told you that. I knew from experience that phenylephrine doesn't work (of course my medical background helps in that regard). I will take only cold medications that include pseudoephedrine. Unfortunately they have become increasingly difficult to find due to people using pseudoephedrine to make meth.
If you ask me millions of people that use them are in jeopardy.
