It is odd that some scientists are looking at using Metformin to treat PD: Metformin Repurposing for Parkinson Disease Therapy: Opportunities and Challenges 2022 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Exactly what I was thinking plus if you google this there are studies that say it results in increased numbers of patients developing alzheimers and another one says it is somehow protective so who are you to believe? yikes

Berberine is a potential effective alternative to Metformin as well as a couple other diabetic medications according to this meta analysis :

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Here is a relevant quote from the meta analysis :

' These outcomes suggest that berberine has a potential hypoglycaemic effect, which seems to be as effective as the conventional oral hypoglycaemics. '

Add in studies suggesting that Berberine is beneficial for AD and PD, and Berberine shows the potential to be a first line treatment in diabetics.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl....

Here is a relevant quote from the new 2022 study :

' In recent years, many researches focused on the role of berberine in central nervous system diseases. Among them, the effect of berberine on neurodegenerative diseases has received widespread attention, for example Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and so on. Recent evidence suggests that berberine inhibits the production of neuroinflammation, oxidative, and endoplasmic reticulum stress. These effects can further reduce neuron damage and apoptosis. '

I take Berberine myself for its anti inflammatory, chelating, antioxidant, neuroprotective and anticancer effects among others.

Metformin depletes B12, this could be the why it increases the risk for neurodegenerative diseases.

At this point we don’t have enough data to recommend berberine/metformin or similar compounds for Parkinson’s.

Metformin improves longevity but also effects mitochondria and those are the key neuromuscular powerhouses in Parkinson’s. I am glad I didn’t start metformin like many longevity docs.
