I have included a list of important nutritional supplements and doses in my book "Rethinking Parkinson's Disease" (rethinkingparkinsons.com/).

I have tried to avoid overloading our systems with too many supplements and included the critical ones, with research and how to take.

Some of the supplements you have listed are not needed and/or not effective.

Regarding Vitamin B6: Please Heed park_bear's advice.

"If you are taking high doses of vitamin B6, do not take it as pyridoxine, which is frequently what you get in multivitamins. Take pyridoxal-5-phosphate instead. It is readily available as a supplement."

For Sleep: NW Sleep Tonight - 1 before bedtime

TN Melatonin EP 120 1 one hour before bedtime

Notes: Vitamins and minerals have antioxidant properties and support immune system.

Curamed is Curcumin which is anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant

and promotes Neurogenesis (Do not use turmuric as only 2 to 5% of turmeric is

curcumin).

Glutathione has anti-oxidant properties, anti-aging, detoxifies, supports immune

system and may help Parkinson's symptoms.

Fish Oil provides fatty acids DHA/EPA which help brain function and memory;

neuroprotective; anti-inflammatory and anti-depressant effects.

Grape Seed Extract has anti-cancer, immune system support effects.

Iodine is used for immune system, detoxification and energy.

CoQ 10 protects brain cells from oxidative damage and helps with cellular energy.

Magnesium Threonate is the only form that gets magnesium in the brain &

protected against motor deficits and dopamine neuron loss in mouse models.

(for constipation use Magnesium Citrate 150mg at bedtime)

Rosemary and Sage help focus and mental clarity; 30% reduction of amyloid

plaque.

Ginkgo is an anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and helps blood flow (circulation).

Gluten-free diet - Gluten is inflammatory and degrades Blood Brain Barrier.

Always check with your Doctor first, before starting anything and ask your Pharmacist to check for interactions. Doses can vary depending upon age, weight, kidney/liver function, etc. I am not taking prescription meds, I am fighting PD with a gluten-free diet, exercise, prayer and these supplements. I think there are other supplements worth researching as well as red light therapy, etc. This list might be overwhelming but my neurologist is aware and I am a pharmacist, for what it's worth.

Hello and thank you for such a detailed list. As for your personal PD journey, what are the top five (5) supplements of the list that you feel and observe are the most effective?

Hello, 1. I would look for a good multiple vitamin/mineral supplement derived from whole foods and not synthetic. 2, Curcumin at least twice a day because promotes neurogenesis and is a great anti-inflammatory. 3. Glutathione twice a day for the reasons I listed. 4. CoQ10 twice a day 5. A quality Fish Oil capsule (DHA/EPA) daily. Besides the supplements, high intensity exercise (aerobics, biking, Rock Steady boxing, lifting some weight, etc.) for 30 to 60 minutes at least 3 times a week and gluten-free diet are hugely important no matter what stage of PD.

It's an interesting list, and I've seen many of these vitamins and supplements recommended elsewhere on Healthunlocked. What I'm wondering is which of these has scientific studies, or at least many, many anecdotal recommendations to indicate effectiveness, partly because it's rather difficult to take 30 or more pills/day.

Also, I've come to believe that taking too many medications/vitamins/supplements can lead to drug interactions. Most doctors and pharmacists can research drug interactions on combinations of 3 or 4 substances at most. They can't tell you whether there will be interactions with more than that, and if you're taking a large number of pills, especially in significantly higher doses than normal, you may be doing some harm to yourself as a result.
