Are we SURE we want to increase glutathione? Is glutathione related to the glutamate Excitotoxicity that occurs in PD?

glutathione is an important antioxidant but, can it contribute to the glutamate excitoxicity that occurs in PD and is believed to lead to the GABA astrocytes that cause dopamine neurons to go dormant?

Should we exercise caution in increasing glutathione?

That is the question I posed which lead me to this article.

As it happens I just updated my glutathione post. According to a recent systematic review it helps a little – about two points on the UPDRS part three, if taken intranasally or via IV. So we are not missing much by looking elsewhere.

“Glutathione is a reservoir of glutamate and could influence synaptic excitability.”Quote from my link

Immediate improvements may not be indicative of long term outcome. Im wondering it’s role in glutamate Excitotoxicity.

Glutamate Excitotoxicity is shown to be a cause of PD.

Therefore, I hypothesize that Adding a “reservoir of glutamate” could therefore be detrimental long term despite the short term benefits.

I look forward to reading your link and I hope you will look at mine.

This paper sets forth the mechanisms of excitotoxicity, which are unrelated to having an abundance of glutathione:
