John,

It is a common gourmet spice in Greece which I have been using it for years, sprinkling it on lots of foods I cook. This is what I regularly use. I had found a capsule, too, and I ordered it, but it was unavailable. :(

Wow! I thought the Costco saffron was a good deal, but this looks much better.

Highly recommend it! I am also familiar with the source and its excellent reputation.

Looks good.

Here is another one, with Crocin, Safranal and Picrocrocin units listed. Costly though.

In Italy there is a product that they guarantee contains the chemical principles mentioned but it is also expensive. It is called Zaffit.

ConclusionsIn conclusion, thefindings of this study support previouswork (Purushothumanet al.2013) showing that pre-conditioning with dietary saffron can mitigate MPTP-induced parkinsonian neuropathology, and provide clues tothe molecular mechanisms underlying this protective effect.Further studies are now required to more precisely determinethe optimal saffron dosage for eliciting neuroprotection andassess the efficacy of commencing treatment after diseaseonset (i.e. post-conditioning). Nonetheless, the presentfindings are encouraging for patients given that saffronconsumption is an intervention that is safe, free from sideeffects at therapeutic doses, non-invasive, and easily admin-istered. Further exploration and understanding of the mech-anisms underlying saffron’s broad protective effects shouldhelp dispel skepticism around its use as a prophylactic (andpossibly therapeutic) intervention for neurodegenerativedisease.

Neuroprotective effect of crocin against rotenone-induced Parkinson's disease in rats: Interplay between PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway and enhanced expression of miRNA-7 and miRNA-221

In conclusion, crocin showed promising neuroprotective effects in ROT-induced PD via activation of PI3K/Akt/mTOR axis and enhanced miRNA-7 and miRNA-221.

Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) and major depressive disorder: a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials 2013

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/242...

Conclusion: Findings from clinical trials conducted to date indicate that saffron supplementation can improve symptoms of depression in adults with MDD. Larger clinical trials, conducted by research teams outside of Iran, with long-term follow-ups are needed before firm conclusions can be made regarding saffron's efficacy and safety for treating depressive symptoms.

Thank you for posting this John!

It appears that Saffron also increases short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and alters the gut microbiome (mice) in a positive way, something that PwP have a shortage of and it also has the desirable anti oxidative stress effects as well as antiinflammatory effects! These are all useful characteristics in an anti PD supplement. These are effects that would be quite handy for C/L to have to offset the oxidative stress that C/L causes, but is lacking. Saffron also has the positive effect of improving the gut mucosal barrier. These are similar to some of the effects of FMT.

Here is a link to a typical Saffron Extract supplement on Amazon :

I would have to read more to get a better idea on dosing, but if you had to take one a day the cost would be $.30 cents/day and if you had to take two per day it would be double or $.60 cents/day plus shipping and tax.

I would prefer to take the actual Saffron instead of any supplement.

Here is another one that seems to be good. (From Spain)
