very interesting, thanks! I presently use Feverfew to inhibit/block inflammasomes:
"we hope to find a biological active ingredient that synergizes with a low-dose of l-DOPA to achieve the same therapeutic effect as that of a high-dose of l-DOPA. The natural product parthenolide (PTL) is the active ingredient in the medicinal plant feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties....In this study, we found that the parthenolide derivative ACT001 exhibits significant neuroprotective effects against MPTP-induced PD in mice and demonstrated that ACT001-induced neuroprotection is mediated by the inhibition of neuroinflammation, the inhibition of apoptosis and the promotion of neuronal survival (Fig. 9). Consequently, ACT001 could serve as a complementary drug to low doses of l-DOPA to ameliorate PD."
"Parthenolide is a broad-spectrum inhibitor with numerous anti-inflammatory properties [1]. Its targets include NF‑κB, caspase-1, and multiple inflammasomes."
My husband took berberine and allimed (garlic) week about with probiotics for over a year and it cured his rosacea and acne and got rid of his PD smell.
First rid the diet of sugar and he did gluten free too. This starves the bacteria. He didn’t do this first so the die off made him quite sick for a while but I’ve since been told this is what he should have done first.
For bacteria etc
Berberine 500mg 1 twice daily for 3 days then 2 twice daily for 4 days
Allimed Allicin from garlic 450mg 1x 3 times daily for 3 days then 2 x 3 times daily for 4 days
Followed by
Probiotics 1 twice daily for 3 days then 2 twice daily for 4 days
Repeat these two weeks.
It took over a year before I noticed the smell was gone and he has been strict on the diet too. Occasionally the odd spot comes back now and he has another week of the berberine allimed but doesn’t have it regularly now.
Previously he had been on doxycycline for years which didn’t fix it.
That top link is the probiotic but I think it was a health specialist only one so the naturopath prescribed it. They key is it needs to have a very high count. We actually eventually bought a different one as that one was very expensive.
I’m not sure how important the probiotic is, I thought it was the berberine and allimed that were the key. I imagine eating a range of fermented foods might be as good if not better than taking the probiotic.
He also takes pantothine from NOW and a digestive enzymes every meal to help with digestion. B5 helps process fats and so does the enzyme. I think he has trouble with metabolism of fatty acids so I think these help too. He skin used to be extremely greasy which was adding to the odour but now it is normal, red face gone!
Via interaction with the gut microbiome, Berberine increases levodopa in the gut that is then transported to the brain to be converted to dopamine in the brain thereby increasing dopamine availability.
Berberine's beneficial effects seem to mainly be done via modulation of the gut microbiota because if Berberine is delivered directly to other parts of the body such as the brain, it will have DA neuron damaging effects as well as dopamine reducing effects.
Berberine has a good safety profile and is quite versatile in human health.
In my post on Berberine you can read about Berberine's healthful effects in T2DM and PD. It is a potent molecule that is thought to have similar effects to the frontline T2DM diabetes medication, Metformin. Gotta go, it is time for dinner!
