I posted a video on Art's recent FMT post pretty late and most people probably missed it. MBAnderson suggested I should post it as a new separate post.
Watch "What's Living in You" by NOVA. It's near an hour but not a dull moment.
I watched it when you posted it and it seems to further the idea that the bacteria in the gut, control many more aspects of human health than many scientists even realize. The video gives a "bigger picture perspective" than what is normally seen by doctors and lay people. It is a real eye opener and quite informative for people who have illness that also involves gut dysbiosis and even for people who have illness that does not seem to have gut dysbiosis as a factor, as the the gut microbiome almost seems to be more important and in control than possibly the brain. It also explains how antibiotics may ultimately work against human health by further disrupting the bacterial balance, abundance and diversity. Diversity and abundance seem to be two important factors in a healthy gut microbiome and is generally what is seen in healthy people.
It is just my opinion, but it seems possible to me that PD and many other diseases may originate in the gut. This could at least partially explain why altering the gut microbiome away from pathogenic bacteria toward health promoting bacteria in a more "harmonic balance" made such a significant improvement in SIBO, constipation, motor symptoms and non motor symptoms in the FMT/PwP studies of 2020and 2021. It could also partially explain why poisons and pesticides which directly affect the gut microbiota in a negative manor can potentially result in a multitude of health conditions.
Based on current research, it seems entirely plausible that doctors in the future may prescribe "super synbiotics " to patients for many health conditions such as PD and AD as a treatment plan, followed by an altered diet plan to reestablish and maintain better health!
The therapeutic effects depend very much on the type of probiotic bacteria contained in the symbiotic and on their concentration. Effects that my neurologist doesn't believe in, let alone my family doctor. Therefore it becomes difficult to orient oneself in choosing the symbiotic containing the best mixture of prebiotics and probiotics capable of exerting a positive action on the intestinal microflora.
>>> ' Community richness (chao) and microbial structure in before-FMT PD patients were significantly different from the after-FMT. We observed an increased abundance of Blautia and Prevotella in PD patients after FMT, while the abundance of Bacteroidetes decreased dramatically. ' <<<
A tale of two systems similar to two interconnected computers? Brain (Central Nervous System) first, then Gut (Enteric Nervous System) via, chiefly, the unavoidable Vagus Nerve. This is even more interesting that the main culprit in PD is.... stress, particularly its emotional aspects. In sum, negative emotions give birth to a negative chemistry and microbes would rush down the gut like firemen...
I am trying, everyday, with a Chinese device called Meridian Energy Pen. Unlike the girl in the quoted video, I also add a deep breath at each point, awaiting that awesome spontaneous shudder down the spine so grandly described in the literature and supposed to switch back that bloody nerve on and, by the same token, the whole parasympathetic system, which will also mean the natural ending of both constipation and tremoring.
20 years ago I took an acupuncture course at Colorado State Vet school. Enjoyed it enough I came back as a teaching assistant the following three years. So I understand the acupuncture points she is pointing to in the video. Traditional Chinese Medicine says there is a flow of energy in the body and obstructions to the flow lead to organ dysfunction. Needles stimulate the flow of Xi through the obstructed meridian. Her points are more specific for tension and anxiety but who's to say they won't help the Vagus. Because of my tremor I tried acupuncture points for liver pathology but didn't see any effect. So I dunno. I may order an accupen as Amazon is offering free shipping this month.
I just dug out my old e-Acu pen and tried it, but didn't notice any particular effect except the stimulation was pretty sensitive directly on my belly button. I'll try it again when I'm symptomatic. Interesting that the symptoms she notes can also be experienced with lymphatic congestion but I'm sure they're all connected. healthunlocked.com/cure-par...
I also try to keep up with Dr. Weil's 4-7-8 breathing technique which should stimulate the vagus nerve.
Inhale through the nose for 4 seconds, hold it in for 7 seconds and then slowly exhale through the mouth for 8 seconds letting the exhaled air hold your lips slightly open while exhaling. Generally speaking you can feel chest tension start to release during the exhaled air portion of this cycle and with a small amount of practice you can direct that release of tension to different areas of the body by focusing your mind on the area from which you would like to release tension such as the muscle group in the neck and shoulder area.
