I used to take a probiotic everyday but Dr. Mischley said I should stop. Does anyone know why that is?? I couldn't remember what she said about it... Thanks!
Probiotic question: I used to take a... - Cure Parkinson's
Probiotic question
I keep waiting to get a n answer from the Dr herself, or one of her patients. Several have reported this advice from Laurie mischley but nobody has explained it.
I assume it is because many common probiotic cocktails include lactobacillus staphylococcus which is anyway prevalent in PWP, and which metabolises levadopa into dopamine in the gut, which is not helpful
Dr. Mishley has a video about probiotics on her PD School online course. To summarize, she does think that in the not to distant future there will be specific probiotics to recommend to people with PD. However, at this point in time she does not believe enough is known about the gut microbiome of people with PD to make recommendations for probiotics that she is confident would be helpful.
Thank you for taking the time to explain Paul!
Just for a bit of info. I have just been asked if I would like to take part in a trial of probiotics. I said no because I feel I’m very stable on the stuff I’m putting in my body at the moment and don’t want to rock the boat (quite happy to do other trials! ). I got the impression this trial was in its infancy, but it might be worth googling it.
I have been giving my husband with PD a daily probiotic. It has helped his constipation which can be a huge problem for people with PD. I have not noticed any bad effects. He is on 2 Sinemet tablets 4 times a day. I told his Parkinson’s doctor about it and she did not bring up any objections.
IMO, probiotics are essential for health, but they should come from natural sources (just as they've done throughout human history). Yogurt is great, but if you're avoiding dairy, you can make your own sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, water kefir, natto, etc. Store-bought versions are rarely lacto-fermented and contain unwanted chemicals and sugar, so it's best to make your own or at least get something from a health food store. I make water kefir and drink it daily. My kids and hubby love it, and we all notice improved gut health.
