Most PwPs adopt a regime to avoid problems with constipation due to progressive slowdown of peristalsis in the gut. Out of necessity not just choice as ignoring it can land you in A&E. There are lots of suggestions on this site!

The answer to your question is yes because Parkinson's reduces the normal amount of peristalsis and the amount of moisture in the G.I. tract. High-dose vitamin B1 is part of the recipe that has cured my constipation. The other part of the recipe for me is high-dose vitamin C, or alternatively docusate sodium, to restore normal amounts of moisture.

I time my doses of medication to ensure approx 90 minutes before or after ingesting any high protien foods

I agree with you. Bear....high dose B1, and or high dose Vitamin C ( I use powdered mix) alone or in combination works for me regardless of what causes the condition. Also, magnesium drops also works.

As to the cause, a couple of neurologists told me the C/D , especially Rytary will cause or exacerbate constipation. Just another negative side effect of standard PD meds.

Do you think Liposomal Vitamin C will also help with constipation? Or should it be high dose vitamin C in other forms? I did see your previous post about the formula you use! Thanks

I do not think that liposomal vitamin C would help because it is an entirely different animal. Also, liposomal C is expensive and it takes a fair quantity of vitamin C to draw water into the colon - I currently take 5 to 10 g daily, spread out over the course of the day.

Constipation is a very very common symptom that is part of the wide range of symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease. Sometimes, it's the very first symptom to manifest.

Miralax is the least harmful, long term use medication for constipation. Take it after consulting with your doctor and follow the instructions faithfully. The other replies to your question have explained to you the medical aspect of why this happens in PwP's.

The effects of Parkinson's on your digestive system is not temporary and therefore better that you speak with your doctor and address this matter so that he or she knows the entire picture of your condition. You can then adopt a regimen that you will need to follow for the rest of your life.

Thank you for your reply. We Had a telephone consultation last week and mentioned it and he dismissed it as not part of the Parkinsons, but incontinence is? Which my brother, thankfully, does not have. But not helpful we have been trying Lactulose.

No, no, no to the lactulose. This will aggravate the problem to the extent that you can't go without it. Likewise dulcolax. I have my constipation under control by eating one small bowl of berries after dinner (with a spoonful of creme fraiche). If I do not have a bowel movement the next morning I take a sachet of laxidol (prescribed by GP) before bed and the results are nothing short of miraculous. I think that constipation is the worst symptom of this disease. Never be shy of asking your dr. for advice. They don't know much about PD but they certainly know about POO......

The brain sends signals /information to all muscles and receives information back , confirmations, various things happen as a result. Both external voluntary muscles and internal involuntary muscles are involved. The comunication system breaks down. Think how many muscles there are in your body resulting in, dry eyes, swallowing , bowls constipation, urinating , dry mouth, sex and it goes on and on and on and on. Just one damn thing after another.

I take senna tablets - inexpensive and available on Amazon. Adds fiber. Recommended by my nuero.

Incredible, thanks for the hot tip! Also, glad you found a solution for yourself that works!

Try magnesium supplements. CALM is a powder form that as the name implies is also calming.
