Use of B complex

jeeves19 profile image
48 Replies

Hi gang. I read the other day that PWPs are often deficient in several B vitamins. So I went and ordered a B complex from Amazon. I have two issues though that I’d be grateful if anybody could inform me of: firstly, how often? Daily, weekly?

Also, there appears to be a school of thought that such a supplement is flushed out of the body quickly as they’re not really bioavailable. Similarly I’d welcome any thoughts on this point.

Cheers to you all and hope you have a Happy New Year..

This is definitely the website to learn about it. Glad you found it! You want B1-HDL. Here is a link. healthunlocked.com/parkinso... husband takes it and many others on this site. There is a lot of help here.

I take a sustained release B complex of modest strength every night before bedtime, and that seems to have been good for me. Others will know the specifics, but I believe the B6 element should not be too high and is best included as pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)..

It would definitely be helpful if you provide a link to the product you purchased to facilitate informed comment ✨🙏🏾✨

Hi there. ‘Facilitate informed consent’ seems a very formal response

‘Facilitate informed comment seems a very formal response’. So I have been told on many occasions. But this is who I am ✨✌🏾✨

Solgar B Complex

I would have preferred -

B1: Thiamine HCL rather than Thiamine Mononitrate (Bio-availability issues)

B6: P-5-P rather than Pyridoxine HCL. Or at least a blend.

See park_bear pivotal post on this issue here

healthunlocked.com/parkinso...

B9: Folate not Folic Acid (*Methylation issues)

B12: Methylcobalamin not Cyanocobalamin (*Methylation issues)

*Body has work to do before this nutrient can be used.

May be good enough for ordinary folks, but would not recommend for anyone with a compromised system. And yes that includes all PWP folks.

For comparison purposes this is what I use - not perfect by any means but I do think it a better product

Try Hardy's daily essential nutrients. It not only has the b vitamins in the most easily absorbed form but many other minerals vitamins and other useful compounds. Clinical dose is 4 X 3 per day.

I don’t think we can get Hardy’s in 🇬🇧 sadly. Thanks for writing though.

Oh sorry. I thought they shipped worldwide. It lists UK as a possible address. You need doctors sign off though.

Yes we can........naturalmentalhealth.co.uk/s... thinking of buying it for my PWP but a little concerned it contains iron, and the vitamin B6 is in the form of Pyridoxine HCL

Is this good to take?

Unfortunately you can not just rely on the Supplement Facts as per your photo.

So while the details look good, you still need to trust the brand. This is so because with supplements there are no regulatory bodies.

If you trust the brand go for it 🌺

But what other option but to trust the listing?

CaseyInsights profile image
CaseyInsights in reply to JayPwP

These are some trusted brands.

pureformulas.com/profession...

Two things to note (1) the list is not comprehensive (2) they are not cheap.

I have used Designs for Health, Pure Encapsulations and Klaire Labs.

Explore the website of the companies listed in the link and get a feel for how they conduct their business. It may give you an insight into how to spot a good brand that may be not on the listing. 🌺

Do you take Dopa Plus from pure encapsulation? I used it before C/L. My nutritionist/pharmacist said I shouldn't take it with c/l.any thoughts?

CaseyInsights profile image
CaseyInsights in reply to Smittybear7

My spouse has not used DopaPlus. The combination looks interesting however.

And no I would not advise taking the cardidopa/levodopa and DopaPlus together. Take one or the other, which ever gives the best symptom relief.

My spouse prefers DopaBoost and I would also make that judgement call. But when DopaBoost was unavailable we switched to c/l until supply came back.

Do not make this an issue. My advice is to choose which one suits you best.

Nuff said! 🌺

I'm a little concerned a trying to stop the CL and go back to the dopa Plus. I've heard you have to wean off the CL. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help

....and as quite a few supplements suppliers are small companies and contract out for their product you may also look for ‘Manufactured in a GMP Registered Facility’ statement. 🌹

Edit: GMP means Good Manufacturing Practice.

One more question, should I take this with HDT B1 or at another time separately?

CaseyInsights profile image
CaseyInsights in reply to JayPwP

There should not be an issue on timing and mix of supplements.

If however you take cardidopa/levadopa combo do take outside a two hour window.🌺

Liquid B-complex is more bioavailable. One of the best Bs is SIGFORM. It has all the right forms of B vitamin. B6 is in the high end of RDA (50mg), but you can take less than the recommended dose on the bottle. We buy it from Amazon. You have to search for the specific B complex as the search engine won't have it on the list of Bs. (Thank you, PB! :) )

Remember you have to take B6 at least 2 hours before or after your L/C meds as the two are competing to get to the brain.

Thorne's Basic B complex has all the B6 as P5P. My daughter and husband were having nausea problems with Pure's B complex which is a mix of pyridoxine and P5P. The Thorne product worked for them. Their multi looks interesting, it includes selenomethionine.

And do you know that these are actually helping?

faridaro profile image
faridaro in reply to jeeves19

Not sure if these are helping since I also take other supplements. I just like the composition and chemical bioavailability of this formula as I overdosed with taking only 25 mg/day of B6 in a different one (my blood level of B6 went 3x lab reference range and was causing increase in foot neuropathy) . This formulation has less B6 and is very clean - has minimal amount of inactive ingredients. The company itself is top of the line in supplement manufacturing industry however is more expensive, but I trust their quality.

Pure encapsulations is a good company.

My dear friend, if you feel no immediate effect from taking a B-Complex, you will never know what it is doing, unless you undertake a battery of monthly lab test.

If you understand the chemistry you will take it. Just consider it nutritional insurance.

Happy New Year, friend! Hope this year is better, for all of us! I take B-1 high potency ( one every other day ), and a multivitamin B-Complex ( one a day ). I’ve been doing this, for the last 6 months, and, believe it, or not, I feel somewhat better, overall! I’m able to function in a more normal manner ( before Parkinson’s came into my life ). Stay safe this year, and wishing you, and your family a healthy, 2021!

Piano playing is good for the soul, and is good for stress relief! I hope you get past the initial mechanical part, of learning how to play, because once you get a feel for the piano, and remember fingerings, keys, etc., it can open the door to many opportunities, Adam! It is definitely good for the brain, buddy!! How is your Havanese buddy doing? Stay safe! Doug

It’s interesting though. Dr Constantini seems to be cautious of adding B6? I thee needed this to counter deficiencies caused by CL?

pmmargo profile image

if you are taking c/l you need to be careful not to take it together or vitamin B6 will block absorption. park_bear has written about this and I have experienced it.

i was just thinking that too. too bad we have to take all of our b vitamins individually now!
