Does anyone have information on the interaction between thiamine (I am following the HDT protocol, 1.5 g BID) and magnesium? I have a vague recollection of reading on this thread that HDT depletes magnesium levels but cannot find that discussion. Thanks!

Thiamine and magnesium
It's always a good idea to supplement magnesium whether you're doing HDT or not. If you're not supplementing, you're most likely deficient already.
Magnesium is a required co-factor to allow thiamine to covert to its active form thiamine pyrophosphate.
Magnesium L-Threonate is a good form that crosses the BBB.
tacato,
I wrote a little bit on the relation of magnesium to B-1 over two years ago, but the information is still relevant. On a related note, Dr. Costantini recommended a magnesium blend as did forum member Kia17 who actually uses both magnesium blends to good effect. Dr. Costantini usually withheld using magnesium until after your B-1 dose was optimized to the individual patient and then if symptom relief did not reach his expectations, he would consider adding magnesium and or a few B vitamins in fairly small amounts, but again, only if he felt the B-1 alone was not enough to obtain maximum benefit . His preferred blend was an Italian multi magnesium supplement called Aximagnesio. Unfortunately that brand is only available in Italy, but I believe the blend that Kia17 found is also quite effective if needed, but again waiting until you find your correct dose of B-1 would be Dr. C's advice. The Aximagnesio Dr. C. recommends has quite a few forms of magnesium as well as what appears to be a possible absorption enhancer or two in it. Generally, the three forms of magnesium that more specifically target the brain are magnesium l threonate (Mag-T), magnesium aspartate which is absorbed very quickly in multiple areas of the body including the brain and the third being magnesium taurate and the taurine content has additional benefit which may be relevant in PD. Two other bioavailable forms of magnesium are magnesium glycinate and magnesium chloride in topical or oral form. The topical form being magnesium chloride oil or mag oil (MO).
Here is a link to a short post I wrote about magnesium and HDT/B-1. I also recommend that you read some of the replies to that post as there is some good information in there! :

Here is a link to a post by Kia17 where he describes the two magnesium blends that he uses to good effect. Again, reading the replies/comments is a good idea as there is useful information in there also :

Lastly, I wrote a fairly comprehensive post about HDT/B-1 that contains an HDT FAQ page where Dr. Costantini answers 58 frequently asked questions regarding HDT/B-1 and that post should answer most if not all questions regarding HDT/B-1. :

Good luck!

I take MagEnhance from intelligentlabs (via Amazon)
It doesn't have the magnesium aspartate, but the 3 in it - Taurate, Glycinate and L-Threonate are recommended by Art and Kia
I don't take with B1 at the moment - still experimenting with dose for that - but the magnesium helps in other ways esp. sleep.
Smokeypurple,
The ingredients in MagEnhance appear to be essentially the same as Kia's recommended, MagTech, but the MagEnhance is $10 cheaper.
Here are the listed ingredients in MagTech:
MAGNESIUM : 200 mg 50%
(from 1,000 mg of Magnesium L-Threonate)
(from 690 mg of Magnesium Glycinate)
(from 630 mg of Magnesium Taurate)
Other ingredients : Vegetable capsule, cellulose, ascorbyl palmitate, silica.
The listed ingredients for MagEnhance :
Magnesium L Threonate 1,000 mg ~ 18% DV
Magnesium Glycinate 690 mg ~ 21% DV
Magnesium Taurate ~ 630 mg ~ 13% DV
Other ingredients : Vegetable Cellulose (Capsule), Microcrystaline Cellulose, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Silicon Dioxide.
Overall, both have very good forms of magnesium that are likely to be fairly well absorbed and be healthy for you in terms of restoring magnesium level. As mentioned, the MagEnhance is about $10 less than the MagTech.
Thank you for posting about this other brand, Smokeypurple and please update us if you find more benefits than as a sleep enhancer. Specifics are always helpful!

You also need some magnesium to properly absorb and process calcium, and in this context means the neurological signalling functions of calcium as one of the ion-channels your nerves operate through. Also if you happen to be having irritating muscle spasms, sometimes the magnesium eases their frequency down. Good stuff, magnesium.
