Cysteamine as a novel disease-modifying compound for Parkinson's disease: Over a decade of research supporting a clinical trial.

The molecule cystamine, and its reduced form cysteamine, act via a number of pathways identified as being critical to the pathogenesis of PD. In particular, these agents are capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier, promoting the secretion of neurotrophic factors, the inhibition of oxidative stress, the reduction of inflammatory responses and importantly, have already been trialed in humans for a number of other clinical indications. In the last decade, compelling evidence has been accumulated that both cystamine and cysteamine can halt, and even reverse, ongoing neurodegenerative processes in a number of different models of PD, and as such, should now be taken forward to clinical trials in PD

So, are they actually going to proceed to human trials? They say someone should, but I'm unclear as to whether they are actually doing it. Did I miss something?

This is quite a statement:

"Our laboratory has accumulated compelling evidence that both cystamine and cysteamine can halt, and even reverse, ongoing neurodegenerative processes in a number of different models of PD, and as such, should now be taken forward to clinical trials in PD"

"And importantly, have already been trialed in humans for a number of other clinical indications"

Cysteamine is already sold under the names of Cystagon and Procysbi (ER).

Both are used primarily for kidney disease, and in trial for Huntington disease..

If it's already in trial, then it might just be easier to approve for trials and already has a potential market anyway, so it would appear to make some sense to do one.
