Over Medicated?

Added Rasagiline, .05 mg, to morning and afternoon C/L 25/100. PD symptoms seem amped up. Is it possible to over medicate/augment when using these meds and this dose?

It is not supposed to do that but everyone is different. How long have you been taking it?

About 6 weeks.

Well then you given it long enough. This medication is mainly for symptomatic relief. It may also slow progression, but since it is aggravating your symptoms, that is questionable in your case. If it were me I would try stopping and see if symptoms improve. Let your doctor know if you decide to do this.

Thank you for your thoughts. How long a trial do you usually give this type of drug generally!

That number is highly variable. It depends upon the medication, the person, and the reaction. In the case of an adverse reaction, halting immediately can be lifesaving in certain cases. For beneficial effects with high-dose thiamine and celery seed extract, a beneficial result can take months, which is fine if there is no adverse reaction.

In my case, it can take 3/12 before any drug change can be assessed properly. It always follows the same pattern ie immediate but very short-lived improvement (1-2 days) followed by a sudden worsening and finally a slow improvement or not. What symptoms are worse? general or specific? any new symptoms appeared? these are things to watch for which may give a clue.

I should point out, I'm unusual in the length of time to settle, my neuro-team always quote 8 weeks though. One final point to directly answer you, yes, too much medication can make you more parkinsonian.

When you say 'Over medicate', do you mean with levodopa? I stopped taking Sinemet when I started taking Selegiline, which is the same as Rasagiline.

Rasagiline works in a different way to Sinemet. Sinemet (levodopa) is converted inot dopamine in the brain, whereas Rasagiline stops th ebody's nagtural process of getting rid of dopamine that we already have in the brain.

That made sense to me, If I am keeping more dopamine then I should be able to reduce the amount of levodopa I took. That worked for me. You may find that you need to reduce the quantity of levodopa you take. Don't cut down the Rasagiline.

From my studies on PD, that's pretty low dose numbers, I'm progressing faster then expected, went from C/L 25/100 three times a day when first diagnosed 3 years ago, presently I take C/L 250mg four times a day along with one dose of Requip 2mg extended release before bed, God SPeed, pray to Jesus he will hear you....he gets me through my days..
