Grapefruit Juice

I want to try adding grapefruit juice to even out my levadopa. I've read the posts but don't really understand the dosage. I take my c/l 3 times per day. Should I drink a glass of grapefruit juice before each dose? With each dose? How much juice? Thanks in advance for the help.

I am just trying this myself, so....

I encourage you to see the 'wriga' thread below:

healthunlocked.com/parkinso...

This morning wriga suggested starting with 100 ml of grapefruit juice (this is per day)...

ladyaudree profile image
ladyaudree in reply to

I did not see a dose in the article. Is 100ml the suggested starting point?

in reply toladyaudree

The paper referenced in that thread described an n=1 trial. In that trial 250 ml per day was used.

Near the end of the thread Wriga suggested using 100 ml to start... (more cautious)

Hi, how are you doing and hoping all is well!

Just wondering if it's working for you and using it still to reduce C/L reduction?

In addition, please kindly indicate the quantity and when to take it please!

May I thank you in advance as a carer & my wife (diagnosed with PD 3 yrs. ago) will be grateful as well!

The trick will be to not become overmedicated or under-medicated to the point that it may cause problems. Since everyone is different and there are many medication types, doses, etc. it will be difficult to thread the needle.

For example, if I were to drink 200 ml a day and cut my meds in half right off, I wouldn't know what to expect. Is 200 ml of GJ enough to boost my brain L-dopa to cover my C/L reduction? Or is it too much? There's no way to guess accurately enough. It's very unlikely that a guess is going to be exactly right.

I've decided to go even more cautiously and just drink 50 ml a day 30 minutes before my first pill in the morning. I'll do this for up to a week. If, after a week I'm seeing no change, I'll up it to 75 ml (or maybe 100 ml) a day but leave everything else alone.

I'm doing this but I'm going very slowly.

ladyaudree in reply toJAS9

Very good advice. Right now I'm not even going to try and reduce my meds. I'm going to try and reduce the down time.

JAS9 profile image
JAS9 in reply toladyaudree

I'm currently slightly under-medicated as I've reduced by about 15% over the past 4 weeks. So I'm doing the same.

Ladyaudree and others who might be new to this subject. Can I suggest to you all that you read thoroughly all that has been written so far before asking questions that have already been answered. This means 2 things.

1) reading all the comments in the HU post cited above by pdinva. There are currently 115 comments to that post. There are some good questions and where I can, I have tried to answer them.

2) Download and keep for future reference 3 articles :

a) Daily inhibition of CYP3A4 alleviates symptoms of Parkinson's....

b) Metabolism of Levodopa.

c) Reference 7 in article (a) by Bailey on Drug-drug interactions and Grapefruit juice.... the reference links are all active.

If you don't read the full articles, you don't get all the info. Don't tell me you don't understand the scientific stuff. This was written for you. You might have to read it ten times, but every time you read it you will understand a bit more.

Hi Albert,

Thanks for sharing valuable research paper i am having studying this.

I am positively gonna try Grapejuice

I am taking ldopa/carbidopa "25/12.5/200 mg (Brand: paridopa)" on empty stomach 30-60 min before meal for better absorption. Understand that 30 min before dopa, Gj have to be taken. right?

Further does Gj is to be taken only once a day or with each dose? i mean am taking paridopa (as above) twice in 24 hours by 11-12 hours gap between.

Kindly assist to reply.

wriga profile image
wriga in reply tokuchee

For GJ, it's just once per day. I don't see how this will help if you only have to take your levodopa meds at 12 hour intervals.

As per PDF, 10/100 mg carb/levo, 4 x daily.

Its, 250 ml grape fruit juice, 30 minutes before taking first dose of medication only.

PDF reference,

The stabilisation phase was rigorously carried out using a base dosage of 10/100mg

Carbidopa/Levodopa 4 x daily. For the inhibition phase, CYP3A4 was inhibited by drinking one glass (250 ml) of grapefruit juice (Tropicana, pamplemousse rose) per day 30 minutes before taking the first dose of medication.

Are you taking any other meds that might be affected by grapefruit juice? There are links within Wriga's posts and references at the end of the article to check for drug interactions.

No other meds so I'm OK to try it.

I am on Sinemet and also take Simvastatin for high cholesterol and the prescription states "avoid Grapefruit juice" , so if you are on Statins I wouldn't drink it.

I started using diatomaetious earth.

Eliminated statins

Cholesterol fine.

What do you do with diatomaceous earth?

Coot18 profile image
Coot18 in reply toKecher

Mix 1 tblsp or so with juice or milk. Daily. Tasteless. Cheap.

Be sure to get food grade at health food store.

Also good to drive off insects.

wriga profile image
wriga in reply toJohnboy46

John,

There are alternative statins that are not affected by GJ, ask your Dr.

Was diagnosed 3 years ago, now I'm up to a 250mg dose of sinemet (cl) 4 times a day and one dose of Requip 2mg ER.

I started testing with grapefruit juice eight days ago drinking 75ml ( 2.5 ounces) first thing in the morning. Now in my 8th day of testing and by the hand of God who worked through Wriga, I have added roughly 30 minutes to my "on" times and "off" times have been reduced by about 40 minutes. Currently, a dose takes around 40 minutes to start working, then "on" time is about 3 hours, and "off" time is around 40 minutes. My goal is to increase grapefruit juice intake by 50ml weekly until I reach one full glass a day and get my daily c/l dosage down too as low as I can tolerate it.

PS. I have not yet reduced my c/l dosage, I will report back after another week of testing.

Blessings and God Speed...

Started my father on grapefruit juice for about 5 days. He is drinking about 2 oz or so between his 1st and 2nd dosages of C/L. He was on 120mg every 3.5 hrs. He normally complains starting about 3 hours after his last dosage, feeling weak, and have problem moving . Now, we move his medications back to every 4 hrs and he isn't complaining/asking when his next dosage with no observed physical decline. On the second day, we forgot to give him his medication and he was fine for about 6 hrs.

Before B1, he was taking meds about every 3 hrs and at higher dosage. Hoping to stay at current dosage levels every 5 hrs. to minimize the side effects on his mental state.

He is ~80 yrs old, 146 lbs., 5.6 ft., male Asian.

I don't know any more about this than you do, but it seems to me that you should keep a sharp eye out for overmedication symptoms. I hope that it continues to go well. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Interested to know what dose of B1, for how long and what benefits has he experienced.

My father was taking B1 500mg x 2 daily. He has more strength over all. He started to roll over in bed, move around without looking like he was trying to catch himself from falling. Eating without choking as often. Urination was improved.

He was up to 2 500mg x 2. Because of so many pills, I started giving him injections 500 mg twice a week and added some b12 with it.
