I had DBS nearly four years ago. The improvement in dyskinesias and gait was dramatic, though overall I don't think there was any improvement in my balance at that time. I was able to reduce my dopamine dose quite significantly. My balance seems to be gradually deteriorating. This may be due, in part, to postural hypotension, which makes me rather dizzy. My gait on one side has also slowly deteriorated. The neurologist says I have some return of dyskinesia, but it's nothing like before.
I can offer the advice I've been given which is: Drink lots of water; Always carry a stick (cane); Stop and think; focus on every move. When facing obstacles or turning use visual cues (focus on one thing, then another, then another - I like red lights, red writing and red signage) as you turn, step by deliberate step. If you begin to freeze or overbalance don't panic. Plant the stick firmly on your better side. Refocus and wait until ready then take one deliberate step, then another. and look out for ankle height animals and children!
Peacocks.....the DBS on my husband worked and the walking and balance got better after the shaking stopped. Sadly, an injury and arthritis dictated a total knee replacement and traveling to post op physical therapy was not good so eventually he ended up with a partially bent leg. Not a fault of the Parkinsons nor the DBS. Three good years, now spiraling downword....maybe a result of natural progression of disease.
Hi, what worked for me was to adjust the frequency of the neurotransmittor to 60 hz (normaly it is 180 hz). I still have balance problems, but i can walk! I have been searching for 4 years = bad time. I hope with all my heart that i will bring you the same effect! It was horrible the last 4 years. Not understood by the doctors.
