can I take these two together
mucuna and benadryl: can I take these two... - Cure Parkinson's
mucuna and benadryl
In general I don't see any adverse interactions between the two drugs. BUT you should know that Benadryl is very strongly anticholinergic. Taking such drugs (like Benadryl) over any long period of time is going to greatly increase your chances of developing dementia, and this effect is even more serious in those who have PD. This link between anticholinergic drugs and dementia has been shown over and over again in research studies.
If you are looking for medicine for seasonal allergies, I believe second generation antihistamines (especially Allegra) don't have the powerful anticholinergic effect, thus they are going to be safer. Nose sprays like nasacort or Flonase might be options to consider, too, although they might be a bit stimulating so don't take them right before bedtime.
The other thing is that, taking anticholinergic drugs like Benadryl is going to cause cognitive deficits in people with PD, in the short term sense. Trouble with speech, organizing thoughts, or memory would be typical short term side effects for PD'ers who take such drugs.
If you're taking Benadryl to help you sleep, that is a very bad idea (for the reasons listed above). Instead, melatonin is very safe and can help with the occasional trouble falling asleep
It calms t the tremor. But thanks for the info.i do take melatonin. Do u know of anything that may calm a tremor...something natural.
I would say that if you take other over the counter meds, don't take them at the same time you take Mucuna. If you use Mucuna, you are probably taking it at night. Don't take or eat anything with that. But after Mucuna takes affect, I would think it is safe to take some allergy medication. I would put at least 45 minutes to an hour between Mucuna and benadryl. That's what I would do.
