Swollen feet and ankles: Has anyone had... - Cure Parkinson's
Swollen feet and ankles
Hi, when I started Ropinerole and Madapar my feet and ankles did swell, at the moment I only have swelling and pain in my left foot.
Amantadine causes swellling & redness.
do you know if there is an alternative to Amantadine?
I offer the following information cautiously. If there's anything I've learned about people with Parkinsons, it's that the one thing we all have in common is that Parkinsons expresses itself differently in each of us. When I was first diagnosed with PD ten years ago, my movement disorders specialist prescribed Amantadine for tremor. It worked, but I developed painfully swollen feet and ankles and had to discontinue it. In the past year I have been bothered by dyskinesia and my (new) movement disorders specialist said Amantadine is often useful for reducing dyskinesia. However, given my inability to tolerate Amantadine, he prescribed Namenda instead. He said there is some evidence that suggests Namenda can help reduce dyskinesia and it was worth a try. I take 10 mg twice a day and have found the dyskinesia has lessened somewhat, and I have not had any negative side effects. Please keep in mind that I speak only of my own experience.
No I don't but I'm sure someone on here will know. I don't have problems with it but I know several that do.
There isnt really any specific alternative for amantadine, it's out on its own. It was discovered as helpful by chance ( it's a flu medication originally). Recently got publicity because it has helped control MJ fox dyskinesia.
Swelling side effect is common and could well settle down in time. How long have you been on it? Unfortunately other PD meds can also cause swelling.
There are other threads on this try searching amantadine .
I guess that I have been on the Amantadine approx 1 year. Prior to my taking it, there was no swelling
I have swollen feet, ankles and calf muscles, and a lot of dark red skin. I've had cellulitis in the past. I take Stalevo (300mg/day), ropinirole (16mg), rasagiline (1mg).

I have had swollen ankles since starting on Ropinerole. When sitting down I try to raise my feet using a footstool when possible, and do foot rotating exercises. Helps a bit but swelling never goes down completely.
The following is part of what wikipedia (careful ?) says about Amantadine.
"Parkinson's disease
Amantadine is a weak antagonist of the NMDA-type glutamate receptor, increases dopamine release, and blocks dopamine reuptake.[3] This makes it a weak therapy for Parkinson's disease. Although, as an antiparkinsonian, it can be used as monotherapy, or together with L-DOPA to treat L-DOPA-related motor fluctuations (i.e., shortening of L-DOPA duration of clinical effect, probably related to progressive neuronal loss) and L-DOPA-related dyskinesias (choreiform movements associated with long-term L-DOPA use, probably related to chronic pulsatile stimulation of dopamine receptors)."
This seems to mean that Amantadine works against MAO-B and COMTAN which work to preserve Levodopa.
L-Dopa and Levo/Carbo are one and the same, I believe.
I had never had swollen ankles until I took Amantadine. The ankles got discolored too, until I stopped the Amantadine. Everything went away once I discontinued the Amantadine. grundybelle
Yes. Having swollen feet since increasing my meds. Don't know if that is the problem or not. Taking enta 100 now.
I had to stop amantadine because of the swelling of feet and ankles
Hi there,
I was prescribed Amantadine last autumn to help control dyskinesia. I started & stopped it 3 times due to adverse side-effects including swollen ankles where the skin was rough & flaky & problems with my mouth & chest (tight with difficulty breathing).
A word of caution: PD is as different as each individual so please keep your support team informed & involved in any proposed changes.
I, too, am taking the two drugs mentioned, but do not have swollen limbs, just pain in the extremities that seems to come from pinched nerve in hip/lower back. Seems to radiate.
Swelling is side effect of the Amantadine, you need to let your Dr. know as the dosage may need to be reduced.
Definitely!! I hate it. I have talked to my neurologist and family doctor many times but neither offer help. I don't enjoy wearing anything above my ankles. Mine occasionally
swell so much that my ankles and lower legs look like blue roadmaps.
