I've had DBS turned off and batteries removed because of infection. It remains to be seen if it gets completely removed or tried again once when all possible signs of infection are gone.
Can the physical presence of electrodes f... - Cure Parkinson's
Can the physical presence of electrodes from DBS have any effect, even if turned off?
sorry, I have no knowledge of this but wanted to say 'hello' since no one has answered you in the two days since you posted.
Over the course of a complete year, I had a total of 5 surgeries involving infection and removal/replacement of DBS and hardware. My point... Now being over two years of normal usage, I would do it all again.
It has been a wonderful addition and I'd hate to think what it would be without it. Make sure all infection and hardware is removed. Half measures did not work for me.
Thanks for replies. Pelley, were you able to insist on nothing remaining, for the first I knew about the electrodes and wiring to behind my ear were still in place was when I came round? Trying to get on top of the infection, by growing from a swab on the wound was the main reason I was kept in hospital for 11 days. Also added to the mix was the fact that the programmer admitted that she had barely had any effect on the powerful tremor that had developed in my right hand (which was largely only in my left pre-operation), plus other PD symptoms not seen until I had the surgery for DBS. PS I'm in Britain, surgery took place in Bristol, if it makes many difference.
