I have been on Azathioprine for 13 years and have been in remission for the last 5. I recently developed basal cell carcinoma and have been advised to stop taking it. My Gastroenterologist has agreed that I should do so. Two questions for those who might have experience of coming off it: Firstly, is it a matter of just stopping taking it or will I be advised to taper off? I’m presently on 125mg a day. Secondly any untoward effects I might look out for?
I would be grateful to hear of any ones experiences . Thank you.

I was on aza for about 4 years along with infliximab until told to stop it at the end of 2021 due to health risks for over 60s. There was no need to taper as apparently it takes 2-3 months to leave the body anyway so the effects gradually fade. About 9 months later, my infliximab dose was increased as colitis symptoms were causing trouble! All fine at the moment.
